Brittany King English 122 June 10, 2021 6-3 Identifying Your Thesis The main claim of David Sedaris’s “Me Talk Pretty Someday” is about overcoming the fear of the unknown to seek out new life adventures. Sedaris is constantly overcoming obstacles and trying new things no matter how terrified these new experiences make him feel. The first key point is the anxiety Sedaris experiences when he first shows up to his class. All the students are much younger than him making him feel even more like a fish out of water. He also feels as though the other students speak French a bit more fluently than himself. Regardless, he goes through with his first day of class.

The second key point is once class starts everyone must go around and say a little about me intro in French. Which immediately has Sedaris on edge he is going through his very limited French vocabulary trying to come up with what to say. However, then he realizes his critical teacher is making judging statements after each intro. Thus, causing even further panic too come up with his intro without bringing to much attention to himself.

The third key point is when he finally starts to understand French. After months of classes, hours of studying, and being constantly made to feel like he would never succeed. He does it. He understands the insult his teacher is saying to him, it brings immediate relief and pride to Sedaris. It is a small win in the grand scheme but it is enough to reinspire him....
