5-2 Magazine Spread Text Layout When thinking on the best way to design my two magazine spread text layouts this week, I chose the selection “Music Talks With Children” by Thomas Tapper. As I read over the story, I was really fascinated by the childlike faith that we so often hear people speak about. The master in the story, in short, told the child that if she would study hard, learn and treat others good, her face would be filled with light. The child listened to him and she followed all his instructions carefully. However, each time she looked in the mirror, she could not see light on her face. This is precious as she took the master’s words literally and truly believed that she would see light on her face if she did as he had told her to. When she continued to see no results from all her efforts, she returns to the master and tells him that she has been diligent and that she tried her best to do good unto others but every single time that she looked in the glass, the light that she had been looking for, which he promised, was not there. He listened to her and tried to explain that it was in this very moment as she spoke to him that her face was filled light and that it was so because every word that she said to him had come from her heart. He continues to explain better what he meant, and their conversation continues. It is this reading that gave me my inspiration for designing these two text spreads. As I thought about the many elements of design that I could incorporate, I ultimately chose to keep it very simple, just like that childlike faith and innocence that we all wish that we could experience. I could have added images and fancy, decorative fonts but I felt that keeping it simple like the faith of this child would be the perfect way to pay tribute to this story. I incorporated principles of typography with kerning and justification throughout each spread and

They are easily readable for the audience and add an elegance to the layout without being distractive, which would take away from the story. In the first magazine spread, I used the fonts Centaur and Poor Richard. Centaur is a serif typeface by designer Bruce Rogers, Nicolas Jenson and Frederic Warde and published by Monotype. This typeface was inspired by the Renaissance period and it contains 8 styles and family package options. Poor Richard is a serif font family that is based on the Keystone Type Foundry design circa 1919. The first digital letterforms were made by Paul Hickson and it was produced by Steve Jackaman in 1997. The second magazine spread was designed using the fonts Snow Fairy and LMS Hundred Acre Halloween. I chose these fonts not only because they are easily readable and legible, but they also make me think of a child. They are fun and almost whimsical. Snow Fairy is a fun display font by Khurasan and is considered a perfect creative font for just about any design. LMS Hundred Acre Halloween was designed by London Letters and is a regular style font with 71 glyphs, 802 ascenders and -200 descenders. This font immediately makes us think of Winnie the Pooh and I thought that it was a great choice to blend with the Snow Fairy as they each make us think of a child. When choosing colors, I wanted a light background color for each spread and then I thought that by incorporating bright, fun colors in the titles and headings, subheadings, etc it would really allow even more of a childlike feel to each design. Elements of design that I used in this project include color, negative space, shapes, hierarchy and contrast. By using each of these elements, I believe that I was able to create a nice, clean layout that effectively reflects the story without being too over-the-top or busy.
