Hamwi & BMI In the past, the preferred method for calculating ideal body weight was the Hamwi method. This method calculates the percentage of ideal body weight through the use of gender and height. For women, allow 100 pounds for the first 5 feet and add 5 pounds for each additional inch (Dudek, 2018). For men, allow 106 pounds for the first 5 feet and then add 6 pounds per additional inch (Dudek, 2018). However, since the 1980s, body mass index (BMI) is now used to evaluate weight status. BMI is calculated by dividing an individual’s weight in kilograms by height in meters squared (kg/m2 ). Established cutoffs identify the parameters of being underweight, normal weight, overweight, obese, and extremely obese.
