10 HERBAL MEDICINES APPROVE BY DOH 1.AKAPULKO (CASSIA ALATA) – also known as “bayabasbayabasan” and “ringworm bush” this herbal medicine is used to treat ringworms and skin fungal infection. BENEFITS AND TREATMENT OF AKAPULKO: 



EXTERNAL USE:  Treatment of skin diseases; tinea infections, insect bites, ringworms, eczema, scabies and itchiness.  Mouthwash in stomatitis. INTERNAL USE:  Expectorant for bronchitis and dyspnea.  Alleviation of asthma symptoms.  Used as diuretics and purgative.  For cough and fever  As a laxatives to expel intestinal parasites and other stomach problems. NOTE: A strong decoction of Akapulko leaves is an abortifacient. Pregnan women should not take decoction of the leaves or any parts of this plant

PREPARATION OF AKAPULKO: There are two methods for preparing ointments: the cold process and the hot process. Both produce standard ointments and are easy to perform. They differ from one another in more ways than just the temperature. Note the differences as you go through the procedure. TheColdProcess: Materials: fresh chopped akapulko leaves, 95% ethyl alcohol, glass jar with cover, strainer, shallow bowl, white petroleum, mortar and pestle/mixing bowl and spoon, ointment jars, labels. Procedure: 1. Macerate/soak the leaves in ethyl alcohol in the glass jar for at least 3 days. Cover and set aside. Add more alcohol to keep the leaves always immersed in the alcohol. 2. On the 4th day, filter the extract through a clean piece of cheesecloth/filter paper. 3. Using a water bath (in a big kettle with water, place your enamel "tabo" containing the extract) and under medium heat evaporate the solvent (the ethyl alcohol) until you get a thick, concentrated extract. 4. Upon reaching the desired consistency, remove the extract from the water bath. 5. Mix thick extract with the white petrolatum in a 15% proportion (15 grams/1 Tablespoon extract for every 100 gms of white petrolatum) until the extract is blended well with the petrolatum. 6. Transfer the akapulko ointment in the desired containers. Label properly. The HotProcess Materials: fresh chopped leaves, vegetable oil, candle (Sperma #5), frying pan, strainer, ointment jars, labels. Proportion: 1 cup fresh chopped leaves: 1 cup vegetable oil, 2 candles, grated. Procedure: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Fry the chopped leaves until crisp. Strain. Add the grated candle to the oil. Heat over low heat until all the candle wax is melted. Mix well. Transfer to ointment jars before the mixture hardens. Label properly.

2. AMPALAYA (MOMORDICA CHARANTIA) – known as “bitter gourd” or “bitter melon” in English, it is most known as a treatment of Diabetes (Diabetes Mellitus), for the non-insulin dependent patient NOTE: In large dozes, pure Ampalaya juice can be a purgative and abortifacient. HERBAL BENEFITS OF AMPALAYA:            

Good for rheumatism and gout. Diseases of spleen and liver. Aids in lowering blood sugar levels. Helps in lowering blood pressure. Disinfects wounds and burns. Can be used as a cough and fever remedy. Treatment for intestinal worms, diarrhea. Helps prevent type of cancer. Enhances immune system to fight infection. Treatment for hemorrhoids. Is and antioxidant and parasiticides. Is antibacterial and antipyretics.

PREPARATION OF AMPALAYA: Cooking. Green fruit and young leaves of Ampalaya are cooked mixed with meat. To lessen the bitterness of the ampalaya fruit, wash or even boiled in water with salt. Poultice. Grounded ampalaya leaves, seeds and root are prepared as poultice applied externally over the affected area to alleviate pain and symptoms of inflammation. It is usually mixed with other herbal oils such as olive and coconut oil. Ampalaya herbal tea. Decoction of tea may be prepared from the powdered Ampalaya or Bitter Melon leaves, seeds and flower. Ampalaya herbal tea or decoction Cut or crush a cup of Ampalaya seeds, leaves and flowers Steep in 4 cups of boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes Let it cool and strain drink a cup three times a day. Ampalaya herbal tea is good to last for one day. Make new Ampalaya herbal tea as needed. Dried ampalaya leaves, flowers and seeds are more potent, use at half dosage.

3. BAWANG (ALLIUM SATIVUM) – popularly known as “garlic”, it mainly reduces cholesterol in the blood and hence, help control blood pressure. HEALTH BENEFITS OF BAWANG:         

Good for the heart. Helps lower bad cholesterol levels (LDL). Aids in lowering blood pressure. Remedy for arteriosclerosis. May help prevent certain types of cancers. Boost immune system to fight infections. With antioxidant properties. Cough and cold remedy. Relieves sore throat, toothache.

  

Aids in treatment of tuberculosis. Helps relieve rheumatism pain. With anticoagulant properties

PREPARATION OF BAWANG: May be fried, roasted, soaked in vinegar for 30 minutes or blanched in boiled Water for 5 minutes. Take 2 pieces three times a day after meals. 4. BAYABAS (PSIDIUM GUAJAVA) – “guava” in English. It is primarily used as an antiseptic, to disinfect wounds. Also, it can be used as a mouth wash to treat tooth decay and gum infection. USES OF BAYABAS:    

Antiseptic, astringent and anthelminthic. Kills bacteria, fungi and ameba. Used to treat diarrhea and nose bleeding. For Hypertension, diabetes and Asthma. The fresh leaves are used to facilitate the healing of of wounds and cuts. A decoction (boiling of water) or infusion of fresh leaves can be used for wound cleaning to prevent infection. Bayabas is also effective for toothaches. NOTE: Bayabas can cause constipation when consume in excess.

Gather fresh bayabas leaves and wash with water. Boil one cup of bayabas leaves in three cups of water for 8 to 10 minutes. Strain and let cool. To use as mouthwash, gargle To use as wound disinfectant, wash affected areas 2 to 3 times a day. Use as vaginal wash especially after child birth.

5. LAGUNDI (VITEX NEGUNDO) – known in English as the “5-leaved chaste tree”. The main use is for the relief of cough and asthma. HERBAL BENEFITS OF LAGUNDI:     

Relief of asthma and pharyngitis Recommended relief of rheumatism dyspepsia, boils. Diarrhea. Treatment of cough and colds, fever, flu, and other bronchopulmonary disorders. Alleviate symptoms of Chicken Pox Removal of worms, and boils.

PREPARATION AND USE: 

oil half cup of chopped fresh or dried leaves in 2 cups of water for 10 to 15 minutes. Drink half cup three times a day..

A decoction (boiling of water) of the roots and leaves of lagundi are applied to wounds, and used as aromatic baths for skin diseases. Boiled seeds are eaten in order to prevent the spreading of toxins and venom from bites of poisonous animals. Juice extracted from the flowers of lagundi is taken in as an aid for disorders like fevers, diarrhea, liver disorders, and even cholera. While a decoction of the plant leaves is suggested to be taken by individuals to help increase the flow and production of milk, as well as to induce menstruation. 6. NIYOG-NIYOGAN (QUISQUALIS INDICA L.) – is a vine known as “Chinese honey suckle”. It is effective in the

elimination of intestinal worms, particularly the Ascaris and Trichina. Only the dried matured seeds are medicinal. BENEFITS AND TREATMENT OF NIYOG-NIYOGAN: Almost all of its parts are used individually, or mixed with other ingredients, as remedy to different ailments. In the Philippines, these are taken to rid people of parasitic worms. Some also use these to help alleviate coughs and diarrhea. Medical experts, advice patients to consult their doctors as improper dosing may cause hiccups. Niyog-niyogan leaves are used to cure body pains by placing them on specific problematic areas of the body. Compound decoctions of the leaves of niyog-niyogan are used in India to alleviate flatulence. PREPARATION OF NIYOG NIYOGAN: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Pound or cut about a tablespoon of flowers of niyog-niyogan Then add in 2 cups of boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes, Strain, Let it cool and drink a cup two to three times a day. Make new niyog-niyogan herbal tea as needed.

7.SAMBONG (BLUMEA BALSAMIFERA) – Blumea Camphora in English. A diuretic that helps in excretion of urinary stones. It can also be used as treatment for edema. HEALTH BENEFITS OF SAMBONG         

Good as a diuretic agent Effective In dissolving kidney stones Aids in treating hypertension and rheumatism Treatment for cold and fever. Anti-diarrheic properties Anti-gastralgic properties. Helps to removes worms. Relief of stomach pain. Treats dysentery, sore throat

PREPARATION OF SAMBONG Sambong tea preparation:      

gather fresh sambong leaves, cut in small pieces wash with fresh water boil 50 grams of sambong leaves to a liter of water let it seep for 10 minutes remove from heat drink while warm 4 glasses a day for best results.
