IB PSYCHOLOGY DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY MARK SCHEME – DEVELOPMENTAL 5 To what extent do sociocultural factors influence the formation and development of gender roles? Refer to the paper 2 assessment criteria when awarding marks. The command term “to what extent” requires candidates to consider the role that sociocultural factors play in the formation and development of gender roles. However, they may argue the extent of this relationship by addressing the influence of biological and cognitive factors. Answers should be supported with appropriate evidence and sound argument and the conclusion should clearly indicate the extent to which sociocultural factors influence gender roles. Answers may focus on psychological theories related to sociocultural influence, such as: • Eagly’s social role theory • Bandura and Mischel’s social learning theory • theories of reinforcement • theories of modelling. Many factors may be discussed, such as: • media • parental influence • stereotypes • cultures. Some relevant studies may be presented as empirical support, such as: • Bandura’s studies • Maccoby and Jacklin’s classic study • Perry and Bussey’s study • Mead’s anthropological studies. Candidates may discuss a relatively small number of sociocultural factors in greater depth or a greater number of sociocultural factors in less depth, thereby demonstrating a breadth of understanding. Both approaches are equally acceptable.
