Dr. Lauren Osmer...
Race in Sport Films (4/1) For today's discussion post, choose a movie you've seen that deals with issues of race and sport (Remember The Titans, 42, The Express, etc. are some examples but there are many others-if you haven't seen a different one, feel free to use Glory Road which you will be watching this week). Consider the concepts discussed in our reading ("Glory Road and the White Savior Historical Sport Film" by Jaime Schultz) and mini-lecture for today and discuss if you think your film of choice reflects ideas from these sources or goes against them. Feel free to respond to or like others' posts-as always, please remember to be respectful and civil in responding to others. This movie is loosely based off Michael Oher's life. The film portrays the Tuohy family as heroic for bringing in Michael and enrolling him into school, and it suggests they almost immediately form a perfect family bond. In reality, these things took time to happen and some pivotal moments in Oher's life were falsely portrayed. Sandra Bullock's character is seemingly the reason that Oher was successful athletically because she basically taught him the rules/plays of the sport. Although this movie is about Oher's life, its main focus is on the Tuohy family and their influence on his life....
