Uncountable and plural nouns Uncountable nouns  





 



Noms dénombrables They are nouns that cannot be “counted” or separated; treated as a “whole/mass”. However, they can be quantified. They are not used with “a/an” or in the plural (only in singular) E.g: advice, information, water, rice, weather, furniture, etc. We bought new furniture last week (not: we bough a new furniture / we bough new fournitures last week) Some nouns have plural forms, but they are still uncountable (we do not use numbers with them) E.g: I bought two pairs of trousers (not: I bough two trousers) Uncountable nouns can be quantified (not counted) by using expressions of measures E.g: he bough a very expensive piece of furniture for his new house Uncountable nouns can be used with determiners (my, her, some, any, no, the, this, that) and expressions of quantity (a lot of, a little) E.g: she’s been studying hard and has made a lot of progress Sometimes uncountable nouns can be used “countably” by using measure E.g: can I have two coffee and a tea please? (two cups of coffee and one of tea)

Countable nouns A house, an apartment, a place to live A suitcase, a bag, a rucksack A loaf (of bread), a (bread) roll A flash of lightning A stroke of luck A coin, a sum of money, a euro, a dollar A journey, a trip A job, a task

Collective nouns 

Collective nouns refer to a group of people (as such they treat it as a “unit”) and are singular in construction (but take a plural verb at time such as “the police”) E.g: a family was travelling along the river / the couple eats out monthly





Collective nouns take plural verbs when the individual members act as “individuals” (as separate from the unit) E.g: the family are each doing a different task / the couple are taking separate cars to work When unsure, you can add “member of” and they use a plural verb E.g: the member of the family are each doing a different task
