Due on Tuesday September 25 at the beginning of class. Please answer one of the following three essay topics in no more than 2 pages (12 pt. font, double-spaced pages):
1. Suppose someone gave the following argument: “When I am in pain, I am certain of the existence of my pain without being certain of the existence of any particular brain state. Therefore, pain is not a brain state.” Is this a good argument? Explain. 2. Is there a sense in which a body is divisible while a mind is not? Explain. Does it follow that a mind is a non-physical substance? 3. Explain and evaluate Ryle’s diagnosis of substance dualism as resting on a category mistake.
