Description

PSYCH 210: THE DIVERSITY OF HUMAN SEXUALITY Dr. Nicole K. McNichols Syllabus: Winter 2021

Course Overview This class offers a broad overview of the most relevant topics today surrounding human sexuality. Topics covered in the course include male and female sexual anatomy, biological sex development, diversity in sex development, gender and gender identity, transgender, sexual orientation, sexual response and behavior, sexual relationships, fetishes and kinks, sexual development throughout the life span, fertility, pregnancy, contraception and abortion, STIs, sexual dysfunction, sexual coercion, sexual harassment, partner violence and sex work. Many of these topics are addressed through the lens of social psychology, however the course also draws heavily from biological and sociological theory and research. During the quarter, we will host a variety of guest panelists who will also provide a more personal, human perspective on many of the topics we discuss. Until November 2020, there was no state mandated sex education in Washington State. For a great number of you, therefore, this is the first time you may be exposed to any sort of comprehensive, research-based sex education. I believe that knowledge is essential to empowerment. My goal, therefore, is to inform you about important topics related to sex, yet also allow and encourage opportunities for self reflection and self discovery. I emphasize respect and inclusion by presenting evidenced-backed information delivered without bias or stigma. I encourage a straightforward and relaxed class atmosphere where no question or idea is discouraged, so long as it comes from an authentic place of inquiry. Finally, please know that my door (and personal zoom link) are always open to any student who wishes to further discuss any topic presented in this class as it relates either to the academic research or to themselves, personally. I welcome all persepctives and wish only to promote understanding, tolerance and self compassion. In many ways I view this class as a collaboration in that I always welcome students’ ideas about ways to incorporate other perspectives or ideas. This class is the culmination of the input of many Psych 210 students who have come before you. Your engagement, feedback and ideas are, therefore, critical to the class’ continuous evolution and improvement. Exams and Homework Exams We will have three exams evenly spaced throughout the quarter. The exams will be available to take on canvas all day on the day of the exam. Once you being the exam, you will have exactly one hour to complete it. All exams are open book and are non-cumulative. There will be no

exam questions from chapters 2 or 3 since these chapters are optional. You can expect questions that cover major themes addressed by our guest speakers as well as from films presented in class and Spotlight Stories from the text. If you wish to review your exam after grades have been posted, you may do so by visiting the TAs during their office hours. TAs will post their office hours for exam review closer to the time of the exam. Homework Homework consists of assigned questions in the interactive text for each chapter. (There are no homework questions for chapters 2 or 3 since these are optional.) It is your responsibility to refer to Tophat for assigned due dates. Assignment due dates are also listed on this syllabus and are always due at the beginning of class time on the day they are due. Homework grades are calculated as a percentage of correctness. You can monitor you overall homework correctness percentage by looking in the Gradebook section of your TopHat account. A 10% buffer will be added to everyone’s final homework percentage to account for missed assignments due to illness, etc. For example, if at the end of the quarter your overall correctness is 84%, you will earn (84% +10%=94% *5 = 4.7) 4.7 out of the 5 total homework points. Note: In order to accomadate students who are adding late, the first day that homework will be due will be on the Wednesday of the third week of the quarter, January 20st. On this day, Chapters 1, 4, 5, 6 and 7 will all be due. It is strongly recommended that you complete chapters 1,4,5,6 and 7 well before their due date, however, and ideally, before the class in which each chapter is covered. Please refer to Tophat to find exact due dates for assignments. Extra Credit There will be a total of 3 extra points that will be made available by completeing the course evaluation at the end of the quarter. How To Calculate Your Grade Final grades will be based upon the following: Homework 10% Exam 1 30% Exam 2 30% Exam 3 30% ________________________________ Total 100 % 1. Score = Your Total Points 2. Decimal score = (Score - 55) / 10 (a score of less than 62 receives a 0.0)

A 95% is a 4.0. After that, every percentage point drop equates to a .1 drop in GPA. Grades are rounded to the nearest whole number. This means that a 94.5% is a 4.0,but a 94.4% is a 3.9. Unless there is a math error, the grade you earned is the grade you will receive. That is, I will not bump your grade up for any reason, nor will I bump your grade down.

The calendar for the course is on the following page. This includes all chapter reading homework due dates. Please review.
