Description

CMD 221 Fall 2020 Absolute / Gauge Pressure Practice Problems INSTRUCTIONS—READ CAREFULLY This is NOT a lab or assignment. These are practice problems to do on your own. Nothing needs to be turned in. Terms: Pabs = absolute pressure Pgauge = gauge pressure Patm = standard atmospheric pressure (for these problems use Patm = 1033 cm H2O) Formula: Pabs = Pgauge + Patm (addition here) Rearrange to solve for gauge pressure: Pgauge = Pabs – Patm (subtraction here) EXAMPLE PROBLEMS (do these as exercises too for extra practice) Example 1: Given a gauge pressure of 137 cm H2O and standard atmospheric pressure, what is the absolute pressure? Pabs = Pgauge + Patm Pabs = 137 cm H2O + 1033 cm H2O Answer: Pabs = 1170 cm H2O Example 2: Given a gauge pressure of -44 (note the minus sign!) cm H2O and standard atmospheric pressure, what is the absolute pressure? Pabs = Pgauge + Patm Pabs = -44 cm H2O + 1033 cm H2O (adding a negative is the same as subtracting the positive amount) Answer: Pabs = 989 cm H2O Example 3: Given an absolute pressure of 1127 cm H2O and standard atmospheric pressure, what is the gauge pressure? Pabs = Pgauge + Patm Rearrange to solve for Pgauge = Pabs - Patm: Pabs = 1127 Patm = 1127 cm H2O - 1033 cm H2O Answer: Pgauge = 94 cm H2O

Absolute/Gauge Practice Problems

Example 4: Given an absolute pressure of 850 cm H2O and standard atmospheric pressure, what is the gauge pressure? Pabs = Pgauge + Patm Rearrange to solve for Pgauge = Pabs - Patm: Pabs = 850 Patm = 850 cm H2O - 1033 cm H2O Answer: Pgauge = -183 cm H2O (note the minus sign!) PRACTICE PROBLEMS 1 Pgauge = 35 cm H2O. What is Pabs ? (ans: 1068 cm H2O) 2 Pgauge = 257 cm H2O. What is Pabs ? (ans: 1290 cm H2O) 3 Pgauge = 1091 cm H2O. What is Pabs ? (ans: 2124 cm H2O) 4 Pgauge = -148 cm H2O. What is Pabs ? (ans: 885 cm H2O) 5 Pgauge = -5 cm H2O. What is Pabs ? (ans: 1028 cm H2O) 6 Pabs = 1093 cm H2O. What is Pgauge ? (ans: 60 cm H2O) 7 Pabs = 1750 cm H2O. What is Pgauge ? (ans: 717 cm H2O) 8 Pabs = 1033 cm H2O. What is Pgauge ? (ans: 0 cm H2O) (good to remember this situation: 0 gauge means the absolute = atmospheric) 9 Pabs = 1003 cm H2O. What is Pgauge ? (ans:-30 cm H2O) 10 Pabs = 902 cm H2O. What is Pgauge ? (ans: -131 cm H2O)
