4-3 Summary Mother Tongue...
[Last Name] 1 Summary
“Mother Tongue” is an entertaining short story about the linguistic upbringing of its writer Amy Tan. In the text she analyzes and reflects on the various forms of English she has spoken throughout her life by recalling moments and memories of her upbringing. Tan illustrates the difficulties associated with speaking a form of English that is hard to understand, and sheds light on an educational system that predominantly places students from bilingual immigrant families into science-related studies, rather than literary fields. Using her mother as an example, Tan concludes that while the way we speak characterizes us, thinking that English can be a measure of someone’s intelligence is a common misconception that needs to be challenged (Tan).
