Review Questions 1. What were the three forms of English madrigals? Describe each type. Madrigal Proper- Composed and used a lot of word paintings. The Ballet- It was a lighter form of the Madrigal Proper and it most of the time was used when people were dancing. The Ayre- This was performed alongside a variety of other instruments to create a unique sound. What were chorales? Why were they popular? Chorales were easily composed melodies. They became popular due to the increase in press printing. 2. What is a consort? A consort is an instrument that consists of six people. 3. Who was Guillaume Dufay? What contributions did he make to Renaissance music? Guillaume Dufay was an early renaissance composer who had written music in many forms with as many instruments as possible to create a melody. 4. Who was William Byrd? What contributions did he make to Renaissance music? William Byrd was a composer that had created the consort music, which is what he is most famously known for. He created many songs during the renaissance.

Critical Thinking Questions 1. How did music in the Renaissance differ from medieval music? These two music’s differed because the two types came from two very different eras. Medieval music was more religious and the music from the renaissance was not. 2. What were the effects of the printing press on music and composers? The composers would create music and go to the printing press in order to have them make a kind of flyer that would spread the word on their newly made songs. 3. If the Renaissance is thought to represent a rebirth or new birth, how is this reflected in the music of the Renaissance? The composers would attempt some new ideas such as spanning out the vocal aspect. They would do this in order to spread their word. 4. What was the role of music during the Renaissance? How was it used in society?

During the renaissance the role of music was used for many things but was mainly used for entertainment and religious purposes in order to express their beliefs and emotions.

5. Many of the songs from ancient times through the Renaissance built on the melodies of previous songs. What were the advantages for composers of using a melody that had already been created? When working with previously made melodies, it took less time for music to be made. They would not have to start from scratch, instead, they had something of their own that they could work with, giving them more time to come out with more music....
