Description

Analyzing an Identity Poem or Song Identity poems are types of poetry that express a certain aspect of a person’s identity. They could be based on a family member, like the ones we studied in class. Or they can also discuss different experiences, like what it’s like to be a woman, to grow up in Toronto, to be young, to be different from the dominant culture around you. In these poems, poets use powerful language to appeal to their reader, to make the reader share or experience what the poet has written about. Task: Find an identity poem or a favourite song that has lyrics about identity. (The idea is that you will use this poem as an inspiration for the poem that you will write.) Once you have found the poem, you need to do the following: 1. Print the poem or song. 2. Explain in a paragraph why you like the poem or song. AND Identify the specific aspect of identity the poet is writing about. 3. Identify 2 or 3 poetic devices used in this poem or song below and explain their effectiveness. Look at the rhetorical devices sheet we did in class. 4. Complete a close reading sheet for the poem or song on the back of this sheet. 5. Hand in this sheet with your poem.
