By Date

Reflective Essay 2 Introduction: The following review is going to examine the key ideas behind the exhibition conducted in the Yiribana Gallery on the selections of the woks from the artists of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. The review is going to reflect on my point of views regarding the work, and the experience and about the knowledge that I gained from it. As I entered the exhibition, the first feelings that stand out to me was the feeling of the shared culture of these indigenous culture and its artists and their work representing the memories of their past. I found myself very shocked and impressed by looking at the experiences that were portrayed in the portraits and works of the artists and found it really interesting that it resonated with my personal experiences as well, which I was not expecting at all. A lot of handicrafts were also demonstrated in the works that were exhibited which showed the level of the craftsmanship of these tribes. “Swimming before School”:

Reflective Essay 3 The work which got my attention the most was the painting by the legendary Ian Abdulla of “Swimming before School”. This painting has vividly recalling the childhood memories of the painter of the peripatetic life of the people of Ngarrindjeri of the River land Region in the rural areas f the Southern Australia. The work exhibits the personal inflection of the stories of the artists which are usually shared by all Aboriginal people who were all later marginalized into the scavenging and seasonal life patterns and dispossessed of their lands. The painting shows the happy memory of a child who is swimming with his family before going to school. The work really showed me how the Aboriginal people consider their past as their happy memories and what constitutes to this happiness. The feeling of freedom, and independence, and the link with their past customs tends to be the more attractive part of their happiness as witnessed in this specific work. Becauseitisbitter:

Reflective Essay 4 This is another major work which I took me by surprise. I was not expecting to see any work using bold texts for expression. This work by Vernon Ah Kee quoting the famous lines by Stephen Crane displayed in linked letters without spacing really intrigued me in analyzing the main thoughts of the artists for creating this work and specifically in this way. The artist here is using the texts in exploring the controversial issues which surrounded the systems of privilege and races. The details of the work showed that the use of the bold letters and in black and white colors was done in order to show it as placard or slogan by the activists or politicians. The use of the running words together without spacing is very interesting as it engages the viewer and forces it to read it out loud for the sake of deciphering the message behind the work. I was unable to read it correctly which led me to find out the lines of this work online and read it in detail. The method used in the work led me to investigate the message behind the portrait by adding curiosity to it. Kulpitjara

[ CITATION NSW19 \l 1033 ] This is the work of Fred Grant which really made me interested in it as well. I just could not decipher the message behind this painting, although at the same time I was mesmerized by its beautiful representation. The artist who painted it was the victim of the atomic testing at the Maralinga and is among the Spinifex peoples who still feel it. This artwork is based on the local impressions of covering the vast areas of the country conveying the [particular knowledge on the locations. The three main waterholes are the sites of Pirilyi where the seven sisters sang and dances, the Rockhole of Makuratjara and the site where bandicoot man died. These three locations which are central and important to the culture of the Aboriginal people are represented and linked in this form of art to showcase their importance.

Reflective Essay 6 Conclusion: The experience in itself, looking back at it, has been very educating for me. I think each of the artists was providing some unique message related to the culture of Aboriginal and Islanders in their own unique ways. Every artist raised questions in my mind related to their works which led mw to ponder its history and importance for the Aboriginal people and their cultures. I felt very shocked at the way an Art exhibition like this can intrigue me to get more knowledge about their culture and interests. I consider this as a very interesting and practical way of educating and creating awareness regarding the cultures and issues of the Aboriginal people. The method of creating curiosity and letting the viewers educate themselves with the knowledge of their culture is very intriguing and interesting for me.
