What makes a Good Leader? Noah Reilly Grand Canyon University UNV-104 21st Century Skills: Communication and Information Literacy 9/25/19

2 What makes a person a good leader? You can go around looking at the many different qualities that people may have but, what makes a good leader? Leaders are good examples and they are people who love others and want to make a difference. When people take the time out of their lives to help others it can truly make the biggest difference in someone’s live. Leadership is an important quality to have in this world because people need a leader to help guide them through life. Some students need someone to love and care for them. A lot of kids grow up in broken homes and it truly breaks my heart. I have been a leader and I try to influence others to be the best they can be. There are characteristics that define good leaders and I will explain them here. The first characteristic of a good leader is having a positive attitude. Attitude is what helps shape a leader. There are a lot of evil and negativity in the world we live in. Sometimes we all need to have a positive attitude to help others succeed in the classroom. When students have an educator who cares for them and also has a positive attitude, they feel like they can accomplish anything they put their mind to. According to (Wormley, 2019), a positive attitude is an optimistic mindset that focuses on the good, while a negative attitude promotes fear and a narrow focus on the bad. Studies have shown that having a positive attitude makes your view of life seem full of possibilities (Wormley, 2019). The second characteristic of a good leader is having a supportive environment. Teaching in a classroom is less about the physical and more about the values and the relationships that are built in the classroom. Leaders need to understand that they need to build relationships with their students and help them in any way they possibly can. School leaders must have the passion to help their students. There are many types of students who will need their own set of needs in order to succeed. Leaders have a lot of traits and they need to assist students with the treatment

3 that they need. Effective leaders understand their students unique needs, they can create a supportive environment and engage in practices that build on employee self-confidence to enhance their performance (Lumadi, R.I. 2017). The third characteristic of a good leader is compassion. A good leader is someone who loves to help and guide others to their destination. According to (Allen, 2019), the greatest influence on a student’s achievement is the teacher. I totally agree with this because teachers are the ones that motivate and help us reach for our dreams. Anyone in the school system is able to help. Leaders don’t have to be only teachers; they can be your parents, pastors, teachers, or anyone you look up to. There are a lot of leaders who inspire students and others to be the best you can be. Compassion is what can help a leader grow. Accountability is important and empathy is a priority in becoming a good leader. There are many answers to what makes a good leader. Leaders are strong and compassionate people who love and care for others. Tree characteristics of a good leader are having a positive attitude, supportive environment, and compassion. Leaders are the top role models for students. The greatest influence in the classroom is the educators. There needs to be more leaders in the world. There needs to be more inspiration to help others to greatness. Leadership is an important aspect of our lives and I know I will be a leader who leads and guides others to success. These are the tree characteristics of a good leader why they play an important role in the society today.
