“A General History of the Pyrates” Source analysis This primary source dating back to 14th May 1724, and is written by the author Captain Charles Johnson (pseudonym)and is a general history of Pirates.

 This source is from the perspective of Captain Charles Johnson  The creator wanted to create a history which outlined an pretty large and absolute history of Pirates  It gives accounts of Pirate life and Pirate encounters and how they became Pirates and so on, giving extensive information. In one quote, the source says “that there are Multitudes of Seamen at this Day unemploy’d; it is but too evident by their straggling, and begging all over the Kingdom. Nor is it so much their Inclination to Idleness, as their own hard Fate, in being cast off after their Work is done, to starve or steal.” This is telling of the hardships people and seamen faced in the Kingdom at this time and how Piracy is a way out to an extent.  It absolute size and extensiveness is a testament to its importance as it holds such a vast amount of information and accounts from many different perspectives.  It is considerably more important and valuable than most other sources of its time.  By reading it you gain insight and perspective already, and by analysing it and studying it you gain even more information.  It could be interpreted as a challenge to common knowledge or belief.  It is slightly biases towards British and slightly demonizing of Pirates but it still does provide pirate perspective which shows more than 1 side of a story.  It is a wide and varying range of Piracy and Piracy events over a long time period.  Possibly, but none that I, personally could recognize...
