Description

Melanie Stiler and Julia Rosen 9/12/20 Professor Horowitz A National Anthem Ha-Tikvah is the national anthem of Israel. The lyrics are from a poem written by Naftali Herx Inber, a Jewish poet. The Ha-Tikvah was only designated as Israel’s national anthem in 2004. In the first verse of the Ha-Tikvah, the anthem reflects the Jews’ desires of returning to the land of Israel and claiming it as a free nation. In the second verse of the Ha-Tikvah, Ibner tries to express the hopes of Jews to be free in a nation after two thousand years of trying. Both the Ha-Tikvah and the Star-Spangled Banner express feelings of patriotism towards their counties, Israel and the United States. They both represent commitment to a country as well as freedoms within that country. In the Star-Spangled Banner, Americans sing “O’er the land of the free.” Similarly, the people of Israel sing “to be a free people in our land”. As seen in the comparison of these two lines, both nations clearly value freedom. The Ha-Tikvah provides a feeling of connection with Jews since it is based on their struggles to provide themselves with their own nation. And with their own nation now, Jews feel relieved and liberated and are able to express their happiness singing the anthem. The Ha-Tikvah inspires hope within the Jewish people, directly translating to “our hope is not yet lost.” We connect to the lyrics and meaning of the Ha-Tikvah because we value freedom as citizens of the United States. Everyone is created equal and deserves to live freely and practice religion as they please, and the Ha-Tikvah depicts the Jews’ journey in securing Israel as their own nation. Also, we both attended Hebrew school growing up. Each day at Hebrew school, we would sing the Ha-Tikvah before we left to go home. The Israeli national anthem is personal to us, as we grew up singing it and still look to it to remember our Jewish roots....
