VIDEO: “Primates” from BBC documentary “LIFE” with David Attenborough 1. Hamadryas baboons have a multi-level society in which “leader males” control “harems” of females within larger groups. What happens when a female strays from her leader male? The male responds quickly and violently to reprimand the female. The examples shown here showed males biting females.

2. How is dominance rank important for Japanese macaques? Dominance determines access to the volcanic hot-springs that provide warmth and shelter from the cold.

3. How do silverback male gorillas defend their territories and females from neighboring males? The use a chest beating call to warn others from entering their territory.

4. What do tarsiers eat and how do they get it? They eat nocturnal bugs. To hunt these, they use wide eyes that can detect light in the darkest environments and sensitive ears that can pick up distant and faint sounds.

5. What is unusual about the infants of Phayre’s leaf monkeys? They are colored brightly orange so that adults can easily keep an eye on them.

6. How do ringtailed lemurs attract mates? Females spread a scent indicating their are in heat. Males then use their tales to spread their own scent to the female, trying to convince her to mate with them, all while trying to fight off other males.

7. What kinds of things do orangutans learn from their mothers? They learn what fruits are dafe to eat and what aren’t, how to tell which fruits are ripened, and which insect nests are safe to raid. Other skills that are taught is how to build a nest and how to make a shelter in the rainstorm.

8. How do baboons of the Cape Peninsula of South Africa supplement their diet? They wait for low tide to search for seafood that has been washed up onto shore, for example shark eggs and muscles.

9. What can capuchins do that most monkeys cannot? They can use tools to retrieve and prepare food. For example, hey use rocks to smash open nuts.

10. What are three types of tools used by the chimpanzees in Guinea? Using twigs to dig up ants, using palm shoots to mash up palm hearts, and using a rock as a hammer to crack open nuts with just enough force to get the nut open, but without smashing the kernel.

But wait……it’s not over! 11. What challenges did Justine Evans face in filming the chimpanzees in Guinea? She needed to gain their trust and permission to record them, and take their unpredictable personalities into account. She also needed to film from a distance and in low light at times in order to get the proper shots of tool use.

12. How many hours of filming do you think it took to get the 45 minutes of footage in the BBC Life: Primates episode? Likely hundreds of hours across many species and locations....
