Description

A multi-dimensional concept—while nations continuously strive for economic growth, people often forget how development encompasses several aspects, especially in what they call a developing country. Growth in the economy has inevitably raised the living standards of the people; since the beginning, nations have been existing in a track field, trying to overcome what one has achieved and contend beyond foreseeable circumstances. In some of the so-called developing countries who lack even the most basic necessities, economy might serve as a foundation to betterment but it is clearly an adequate factor of development, especially when the constituents of a nation are at risk from incapabilities of the governing body to efficiently protect and serve people in different means. With that, an underlying matter of inequality between privileged and marginalized sectors of the society is to be observed. Stated by Center for Strategic and International Studies, “Against the backdrop of an inconsistent government response, the Philippines on August 6 surpassed Indonesia for the most reported cases in Southeast Asia.”. Taking a glimpse on the current situation of the Philippines with predictable pandemic dilemmas, it is evident how the government values the opportunity cost of economic schemes over the welfare of the people, therefore instigating a domino effect on a variety of sectors in the country. For instance, the unemployment rate has escalated where around 7.3 milllion Filipinos have lost jobs after about a 7-month quarantine, as cited in the article written by Uy (2020). Only if the administration imposed strict implementations of policies before the emergence of the pandemic and prioritized this over economic-related relations, there would be more possibilities of mitigating subsequent consequences of the situation. A paper written by Alba (n.d.) explained how growth and modern development cannot be done easily for improvement of the country’s quality of social infrastructure and flawed leadership should primarily transpire. As economic industries set sights toward growth through economic measures, only the privileged ones are able to conveniently enjoy rights to access education, health care, or even the most basic standard of living. In line with this, a bigger picture would have to be seen—the past administrations have been notorious for corruption circumstances concealed in economic developments, leading to a familiar sense of injustice for most Filipinos. While it is true that economic growth could highly affect the way a nation survives with numerous opportunities, it is also important to know how this unconsciously provides a sense of development only for those who possess the power to be apathetic consumers and some of the influential leaders who govern the country with utmost insincerity.
