AACN BSN Essentials 2

Introduction In 1998, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, or AACN, recognized and endorsed the BSN fundamentals. There are nine BSN essentials that are critical to the education and training of baccalaureate-degree-holding nurses. The first essential is liberal education for baccalaureate generalist nursing practice. This is a solid grasp of liberal education that provides a solid basis for nurse education and preparation. The second essential is basic organizational and systems leadership for quality care and patient safety. This plays a role with knowledge and talents in leadership, quality improvement, and client safety issues, which are critical to providing excellent typical health care. Essential three is the scholarship for evidence-based practice. The application and rendering of current data into one's profession is the foundation of this specialized nursing practice. Essential four is the information management and application of patient care technology. In the distribution of the quality of patient care, comprehension and skills in data organization, as well as patient care knowledge, are critical. Essential five is health care policy, finance, and regulatory environments. Health care policies, financial and regulatory, impact the type and standards of the healthcare system and allow for significant reflections in nursing practice. Essential six is interprofessional communication and collaboration in improving patient health outcomes. To provide exceptional and safe patient care, interactions and cooperation among different health professionals are critical. Essential seven is clinical prevention and population health. To improve the health of all populations and nursing practices, a wellness campaign and knowledge on illness prevention at both the individual and population levels are essential. Essential eight is professionalism and professional values. Efficiency and guiding values such as selflessness, self-sufficiency, self-respect, honesty, and equality are all foundations in nursing practice. Essential nine is baccalaureate generalist nursing practice. A

bachelor graduate nurse can care for individuals of all ages from all societies in all healthcare settings. As a result, the graduating nurse understands and values all aspects of client care. These outcomes establish a more specialized, in-depth curriculum and training for students receiving their RN through a pre-licensure BSN program. This is applied to nursing practice by adopting a wide range of skills for nurses, such as changes in demography across a wide range of groups and ages. Also, nurses can offer holistic treatment while using clinical and critical thinking abilities to handle a wide range of situations. The Essentials plays a massive role in ensuring that these professionals are trained in and capable of promoting excellent patient care, focusing on patient safety, and employing evidence-based practice approaches (AACN 2008). Background The American Association of Colleges of Nursing created The AACN Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice (AACN, 2008). The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice has revolutionized healthcare delivery in the United States of America for BSN graduates by establishing a common standard for patient safety, patient engagement, and overall patient care. It is possible to understand the value of patient advocacy and offering quality treatment with the BSN fundamentals to assure the best for patients and their loved ones.“Historically, the nursing role has emphasized partnerships with patients – whether individuals, families, groups, communities, or populations – in order to foster and support the patient’s active participation in determining healthcare decisions (American Association of Colleges of Nursing. 2008)”. These essentials enable student nurses to offer health care to a wide range of people in various situations. They are improving nursing practice and healthcare on a worldwide scale in order to adapt to the country's varied population.
