Course Description and Scope This course seeks to equip you with the skills to communicate effectively in professional business contexts. Career success is often the outcome of constructive workplace relationships and productive collaboration within or across teams. Entrepreneurs, employees as well as self-employed individuals must harness communication skills in order to articulate ideas to customers, suppliers, government and other organisations in the business ecosystem. This course provides you with an introduction to communication principles and theoretical frameworks, which will be applied to written and oral communication, small talk, and social media communication.

Course Learning Objectives By the end of this course, you should be able to: 1. Apply the prevailing communication principles and two frameworks – the Strategic Contingency Model and Aristotle’s three rhetorical appeals – to manage communication in a business context (LO1) 2. Strategise and organise a non-sensitive informative message in a professional business document (LO2) 3. Deliver a professional presentation, demonstrate appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication skills, develop compelling content customised to a workplace audience, exploit the use of visual aids such as slides, and manage Q&A (LO3) 4. Explore and critique social media usage for personal and corporate image management, and be analytical of current as well as new developments of social media particularly critical to business (LO4) 5. Initiate discussions, respond spontaneously to questions and comments, and make contributions that advance the level and depth of discussion (LO5) Learning & Teaching Methods The course is hands-on, practical and interactive, conducted over a 13-week period with one 2-hour seminar per week. You will be given ample opportunities to apply theoretical frameworks to practice presentations and writing practice tasks. You are expected to participate actively and to interact openly to provide constructive feedback at all seminar classes, through class and e-learning discussions, group writing tasks, presentations, and tutor and self or peer feedback sessions. You will receive constructive feedback on your presentations and written assignments from your tutor and sometimes from your peers. This may be provided in class, through small group sessions, or electronically via email or the eUreka system. All presentations will also be video-taped, which will allow opportunities for self-evaluation.

Oral Communication Students will learn to deliver professional presentations and manage Q&A

Students will learn to deliver professional presentations: through appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication skills; compelling and informative content and effective slide usage; they should also manage Q&A spontaneously and confidently (LO1 & LO3)

Students will deliver an oral presentation and be assessed for communication strategy, content development, verbal and non-verbal delivery, appropriate use of visuals and their spontaneous response to Q&A

Written Communication Students will learn to write professional business documents

Students will learn to strategise and organise a non-sensitive informative message in a professional, high quality business document (LO1 & LO2)

In response to a given case study, students will write an email message and be evaluated for communication and organisational strategy, content development, language control and design

The Social Media Assessment and Oral Assessment tasks will be released through the AB0601 NTULearn Main Course Site at least 2 weeks before the presentation. For the Written Assessment, students will be briefed about the venue and seating plan a week before the assessment date.

Attendance and Grades You are expected to complete all assigned pre-class readings and activities, attend all seminar classes punctually, and take all scheduled assignments and tests by the due dates. You are expected to take responsibility to follow up with course notes, assignments and course-related announcements for seminar sessions they have missed. In the event that you are unable to be present for an assessment, an MC must be submitted to UPO within 2 working days from the assessment date. If students are absent from any assessment without a valid MC or approved LOA, you will score “0” for the assessment.
