ABS-CBN Franchise Renewal: Grounds for Acceptance The renewal of the ABS-CBN franchise is a major point of controversy in the Philippines over the reintroduction of the congressional franchise that would have allowed Philippine media network ABS-CBN in order to keep broadcasting rights in the Philippines. The broadcast franchise granted to ABS-CBN on March 30, 1995 expires last May 4, 2020. But does this franchise renewal can never be given a chance again? It was stated that ABS-CBN received many accusations such as tax evasion, labor law violations, political bias in journalistic coverage, and questions of foreign ownership and citizenship. Even if Congress renews the network's franchise, President Rodrigo Duterte has stated that he will not allow the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to provide a permit to operate to ABS-CBN. Approving the franchise renewal of ABS-CBN might rescue 11,000 jobs and their future — ABS-CBN network employees and their families. This network has been serving Filipinos for more than seven decades. Because ABS-CBN is a huge broadcasting business that has already paid 15.3 billion pesos in taxes from 2016 to 2019, it will be an economic calamity if their franchise is not renewed. Businesses are the bloodline of an economy, and without them, the economy will crash, resulting in the demise of the state. The immorality of the ABS-CBN Network's entertainment shows is another issue. A long-time ABSCBN opera lover can attest that practically all of the shows are for General Patronage. We can also attest that the shows it airs portray ideals that are beneficial to all and can boost morale. According to La Via, ABS-CBN is a network that meets the basic principles of broadcast journalism when it comes to press freedom and the alleged bias of the network. It is a competitive, world-class company with outspoken and opinionated anchors as well as independentminded and resourceful journalists. And lastly, ABS-CBN shares are not owned by foreign investors. Concerning Mr. Lopez's citizenship, he is a dual Filipino and American citizen. The Constitution makes no distinction between dual citizens born in the Philippines and dual citizens who meet the nationality requirements for certain economic sectors. Finally, we can conclude that such franchise renewal can be given a chance for the reasons indicated. ABS-CBN has been with us for nearly seven decades, assisting and spreading information to Filipinos not only in the country but around the world. We cannot overstate how much we rely on this networking

provider, but what it demonstrates is how it has remained with us through ups and downs.
