Learning Objectives At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

1. explain why it is essential to understand the self;  Self awareness is very important because if we have a better understanding of ourselves, we are able to experience ourselves as unique individuals. You can be yourself without getting insecure with others. You are more empowered individual. You can easily examine and reflect on your thoughts and actions you’ve done in the past. If you have better understanding of yourself, you have confidence within you.

2. describe and discuss the different notions of the self from the points-of-view of the various philosophers across time and place; and  The pre-socrates philosophers were concerned with answering questions like what is the world really made up for? And they also believed in Arché an origin or source also known as the soul that it has no origin outside self and it can’t be destroyed. From Socrates, he believed that only succeeded made people think about who they are. Plato believed that our soul has 3 components which are the rational soul, spirited soul and lastly the appetitive soul. St. Augustine also believed in Plato’s theory but he adds “christianity” in it and believed that man is a bifurcated nature. Lastly, St. Thomas Aquinas believed that matter (hyle) + form (morphed) = man. He also believed that the soul is what makes us human.  While the modern philosophers like Rene Descartes Father of modern philosophy, believed that the only thing one can doubt is the existence of the self. He also believed that body + mind = human person. David Hume believed that the self is nothing but a bundle of impression and ideas. Like David Hume Immanuel Kant agrees with him That everything starts with perception and sensation of impression. He also The self is not only personality but also the set of knowledge. Gilbert Ryle Denies the internal and non physical self and he believed what truly matters is the behavior that a person manifests in his day-to-day life. For him looking for this office like entering LU and looking for the University. Lastly is Merleau Ponty, She believes that mind and body are inseparable, the living body, his thoughts, emotions and experiences are all one.

3. 3. compare and contrast how the self has been represented in different philosophical schools.  The Rationalism of Rene Descartes (1650) claimed that the Self is a transcendental fact beyond all doubt and beyond all proof. We can never doubt the existence of a thinking Self because doubting itself is a deliberate form of thinking.

 The Skepticism of David Hume (1750) claimed that the Self is merely a bundle of sensations, feelings, emotions and appetites. We cannot even be certain that a Self truly exists — just as we cannot even be certain that Cause and Effect are real. Activity # 1 Do You Truly Know Yourself?

Answer the following questions about your “self” as fully and precisely as you can.

1. How would you characterize yourself?  For me and my experience in life that I have been through, I have learned that I am a positive person, I am strong and I have independent personality. For 19 years, I have faced a lot of difficulties in life and yet I still see myself standing still, holding my ground and facing All the challenges that world threw at me in a positive way. I am a good listener. I accepted my mistakes Easily without pointing others. I am a generous person. I share my talents knowledge skills and even material things that I can share with my friends and everyone. no second thoughts, just sharing as long as I have. Thus, in that 19 years I also possess bad character and that is I don’t trust people easily.

2. What makes you stand out from the rest? What makes yourself special?  Be confident and be true to yourself that makes you stand out from others. when you believed in yourself You can create what you envision, you're not afraid of the trials that you might face. what makes myself special maybe that is the self esteem my mom instilled in me. I will never give up. Not on my dreams, No on my studies, not in my family, Not on everything I want to pursue. I have learnt To be a giver. It's much more satisfying than taking. I am never bored. I may more slower then everyone but I always make sure I can catch up.

4. How has yourself transformed itself?  Change happens through experience. Life itself is one enormous experience composed of thousands of smaller ones, so of course, I've already changed a lot. I become matured. I know to limit myself.

4. How has yourself connected to your body?

 We are certainly connected to your body through a mind, heart, spirit, emotions, and other connecting ligaments. These body components are connected with each in order to function well. ... If your body gets bruised or you cut yourself, the physical pain is also shown in your expression.

5. How is yourself related to other selves?  No matter how unique we are with each other, we are still related to each other. Ourselves somehow affect others with our core values and even what we believed in life. Thus, in relating ourselves with other selves we tend to influence them through the way how we live, how we handle life and how we keep on pushing through.

6. What will happen to yourself after you die?  I believed in second life so specifically after I die maybe I would go in hell where Satan lives nor with our heavenly Father in his paradise....
