Now write a definition: A penguin is a cute, black and white, flightless, small-winged, fish-eating bird which lives in cold places in the Southern Hemisphere. Key points: 1. Use the most specific categories possible. For example, use “bird” instead of “animal” or “creature”. 2. You can add more ideas into a sentence if you change some verb phrases into adjectives. For example, “can’t fly”  “flightless”. Dictation: Listen to your teacher. Write the definition for these words. 1. An ostrich

2. Poutine

Teacher’s Instructions Adjective Clauses – Writing Definitions Step 1: Before giving the handout to students, ask students, “What is a penguin?” As students shout out ideas, the instructor writes them on the board. You should have a list that looks something like this:     

animal creature bird cute black and white

     

small wings can fly can’t swim eats fish lives in the Southern Hemisphere lives in cold places

Step 2: Ask students to combine all of these ideas into one sentence. The sentence should start, “A penguin is …” (Students can work individually or in pairs.) Step 3: Give the handout to students. Go over the key points about writing definitions, as written on the handout. The formula used here is: (A penguin) is an adjective, adjective, adjective noun which verb phrase. Step 4: Student dictation. Read these sentences. Students write them on their handouts. 1. An ostrich

2. Poutine

An ostrich is a large, flightless, African bird which can run very fast. Poutine is a special Canadian food that consists of French fries and curd cheese covered with gravy.

Step 5: The practice exercise can be done for homework or as a game. Game version: Divide students into pairs. Have all students stand up at the whiteboard (lots of whiteboard space is required) and give each pair a whiteboard marker. Ask each team to write a one-sentence definition for the word that you yell out. The sentence must be at least 10 words long. The first team to write a good, grammatically-correct definition gets a point. 1. 2. 3. 4.
