Description

5/12/2019 Tan Han Wen 212/33 Racecourse Road North Melbourne 3051 Victoria 0431888083 [email protected] Course Academic Progress Committee Bachelor of Arts University of Melbourne VIC 3010 To the members of the Course Academic Progress Committee, I am writing to you today with regards to receiving a notice indicating that I have shown unacceptable academic progress this semester. I wish to submit this show cause letter to explain the reasons that led to this result and to show what processes I will put in place to successfully complete my course. The reason that I failed my Intermediate Microeconomics exam in 2019 Semester 1 is that I made a mistake on the exam multiple choice sheet. I accidentally left my question 4 answer box blank and I shaded my answer for question 4 to question 5 box, answer for question 5 to question 6 box and so on. I only realised my mistake at the end of the exam, and I have no time to erase and shade it again. After discussing with the Academic Recovery team about my situation, I realised that I need to improve my time management during exam periods so that I would not study until midnight and go to exam with a focused mind. The Academic Recovery team and I created a time management plan during the At-Risk appointment, this plan has worked well for me since at the start of Semester 2. However, halfway through Semester 2, I started working part-time while studying because I tried to be financially dependent on myself as a university student, therefore, I requested my parents not to give me an allowance but still pay for necessities that I currently unable to afford such as my university tuition fees. I spent nearly 5 hours every day per week working for an online boutique shop and I am responsible for managing their social media accounts, taking orders as well as shipping orders. As a result, I invested only around 25 hours per week on my university course work including tutorials, lectures and assignments, 35 hours on working part-time every week and 8 hours of sleep per night. I thought I could handle my university course work while working part-time to cover the necessities of life such as rent, but I realise I was wrong when I see my devastating result for my core subject. For me, it does not seem that I have spent enough hours in the day to study and keep up with my course work. The first step to improve my grades is to adjust my mindset so that I will not feel depressed or defeated as a result of unsatisfactory academic progress, I believe that having a positive mindset will help me with achieving the improvement that I am capable of achieving. Next, I will quit my part-time job and invest most of my time on my university course work. I tend to increase the total number of hours that I spent on university course work to 35 hours per week thus allows me to have enough hours for revision and be fully prepared before attending tutorials and lectures. I will also proceed with the action plan that I implemented during the At-Risk appointment which I would maintain a regular schedule and stick to it throughout the semester.

Maintaining a regular schedule will help me to be on top of my tasks, therefore, I will be prepared and less anxious when it comes to exams. As a last resort, I will be hiring a private tutor to help me improve my grades if necessary. Some extra tuition might be helpful for me to bring up the grade for tricky subjects especially the core subject I failed. I would like the Committee to allow me to continue with my degree in Bachelor of Arts with or without any restriction, I will work to the best of my ability and prove that I have the capacity finish my course. To support my letter of show cause, I have attached a letter from employer and an action plan that I implemented with student connect team in Melbourne University as documentary evidence. I believe that the above letter indicates the circumstances that have occurred strongly affected my ability to perform academically to my full potential. I truly hope you will consider my case and allow me to continue with my course at Melbourne university. Thank you. Yours sincerely, Tan Han Wen 999995...
