Perceptions of aging and ageism Experience with ageism and ageist stereotypes 

Promoting healthy aging by confronting ageism o Nelson, T. (2016). Promoting healthy aging by confronting ageism. American Psychologist, 71(4), 276-282. http://dx.doi.org.proxybc.researchport.umd.edu/10.1037/a0040221 o http://eds.a.ebscohost.com.proxy-bc.researchport.umd.edu/eds/detail/detail? sid=1ddcf0e5-1aef-45a7-9693786a9e09d001%40sessionmgr4007&vid=0&hid=4213&bdata=JkF1dGhUeXBlPWlwLHVy bCx1aWQmc2l0ZT1lZHMtbGl2ZSZzY29wZT1zaXRl#AN=2016-21979-003&db=pdh o “Much research has demonstrated a clear, direct threat to the cognition of older persons when older individuals believe in the truth of those negative stereotypes”  In one study, older and younger people were primed with implicit and explicit age stereotypes. When older people and middle aged people were primed, they performed worse on a memory test than when positive stereotypes were primed  Cultural difference in treatment of elders. Chinese older adults performed better than American older adults on memory tests. Chinese culture has positive view of aging.  Locus of control- when older people believe poor physical health is due to age and out of their control they are less likely to seek preventative care and more likely to experience stress and anxiety o “Negative age stereotypes also have significant negative effects on the physical wellbeing of older persons”  “Recovery from illness is impaired”  “Cardiovascular reactivity to stress is increased”  Participants were primed with positive or negative age stereotypes. Those who had been exposed to negative age stereotypes showed a greater cardiovascular response to a series of stressful tasks.  “Longevity is decreased”  Older people with higher expectations regarding their mental health lived 2.5 years longer than those with low expectations. Older people with higher expectations regarding their physical health lived 4.5 years longer than those without. Ageism Stakes Its Claim in the Social Sciences o North, M. S. (2015). Ageism Stakes Its Claim in the Social Sciences. Generations, 39(3), 29-33. o http://eds.a.ebscohost.com.proxy-bc.researchport.umd.edu/eds/detail/detail? sid=9ec12855-d9c1-4d4a-88e7-9642f318bd6d

(2015). Ageism and Bias in the American Workplace. Generations, 39(3), 34-38. o Ageism is prevalent in the American workplace o

Hiring is not always done objectively- age can be a factor  Employers were over 40% more likely to call a female job candidate for an interview if the high school graduation date indicated she was younger rather than older  45% of unemployed older adults (55-64yo) were reported as unemployed long term versus 33% of 25-34 year olds Research challenges ageist myths in the workplace  One study dhows time-per-call for younger workers was lower than for older workers, giving younger workers the appearance of being more productive by that measure. However, older people booked more reservations than younger people, generating more revenue overall. Definition of ageism “treating an applicant or employee less favorably because he or she is older than 40 is discrimination and illegal under federal law, as outlined in the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967” Internships and apprenticeships may help older people match with employers more successfully and earn more http://eds.a.ebscohost.com.proxy-bc.researchport.umd.edu/eds/detail/detail? sid=f65cd276-06ab-4486-b5c9-4cbc2e92c45f %40sessionmgr4006&vid=0&hid=4213&bdata=JkF1dGhUeXBlPWlwLHVybCx1aWQmc2l0 ZT1lZHMtbGl2ZSZzY29wZT1zaXRl#AN=112207263&db=sih

Anthropological Review, 79(2), 115-142. http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0160264 o Cellular senescence “a programmed response of cells to diverse stressing, including oxidative damage, telomere shortening oncogene activation an changes in chromatin structure” o Entropic/thermodynamic view has been rejected o Deterministic model of aging ”genetically programmed causes of aging”  Not popular o Compare with stochastic model of aging “random molecular damage”  Outlook on aging therapy no optimistic if this is true o Senescence occurs as a product of evolutions “the species reaches as evolutionary stable strategy for life span that would be less or as stable if longevity were increased”  Debated Time Trends in Prevalence of Chronic Diseases and Multimorbidity Not Only due to Aging: Data from General Practices and Health Surveys o Van Oostrom, S.
