Description

Butler 1 Sierra Butler Dr. Hodge ENC 1143 19 September 2019 Rhetorical Summary : Agnotology In “Agnotology: the making and unmaking of ignorance,” Robert N. Proctor and Londa Schiebinger argue that there is no word to describe ignorance and all the different types of ignorance. To an audience of other psychology researchers, Proctor writes an informative/argumentative article in order to bring attention to the word Agnotology. This article was written through several headings followed by a fairly long paragraph. The headings described what type of ignorance the author was talking about within that paragraph. This type of structure allows the reader to prepare themselves about what they are about to learn/read about. It helps keep the article organized. Proctor carries out his article using pathos and logos. The majority of the time he mentions his own experience from Pennsylvania State University and witnessing other people dealing with ignorance. He uses the word “I” a lot before beginning a sentence which is referencing to his own knowledge and own ignorance.Proctor also references other events like the tobacco ignorance where he talked about how tobacco companies used ignorance to their advantage. He also mentions small facts and references to relevant people like the media analyst Sut jhally. Proctor’s main point is to bring attention to the word agnotology and have people pay more attention to the topic of ignorance rather than the topic of knowledge.
