Mod10 REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER ___________
Description of Procedure An albumin blood test measures the amount of albumin in ones blood. Albumin is a protein manufactured by the liver that helps keep fluid within the bloodstream. It also helps carry materials throughout the body, including hormones, enzymes, and vitamins. Indications Possible nutritional deficiencies, diabetes mellitus management, jaundice, cirrosis, alcoholic hepatitis, cystic fibrosis, marasmus, chronic conditions of unknown origin
Interpretation of Findings A normal blood albumin level is 3.4 - 5.4 mg/ dL; low levels may indicate malnourishment, liver disease, kidney issues, or inflammatory disease; high levels may indicate dehydration, severe diarrhea, or the patient may possibly be taking steroids, insulins, or hormones
Potential Complications Blood tests carry very little risk for complications; may experience slight pain or bruising at the site in which the needle entered but most symptoms go away quickly and do not cause additional issues
