Notes on naming Alkynes...

Description

1-(hexa-1,3,5-t riynyl)-cyclopropane hexa-1,3,5-t riyn-1-ylcyclopropane

Because the alkyne chain is substituted at what can ONLY be the 1 position of the propane ring and the 1 position of the alkyne chain, you can put the one in either or both locations. All are acceptable.

However, as a clearer example of the rules: The 4 in this name indicates where on the parent ring the alkyne substituent is located. So, OUTSIDE the parentheses indicates the location on the parent chain/ring.

4-(buta-1,3-diyn-1-yl)cyclohe x-1-ene

The 1 in this name indicates where in the alkyne chain the chain is connected to the parent ring.

If we put the 1 outside the parentheses, it gives us a different structure (AKA it puts the alkyne chain on C1 of the ring instead of C4). 1-(buta-1,3-diynyl)cyc lohex-1-ene

An example where the alkyl substituent doesn’t have to connect at C1 of the chain: The 4 in this name indicates where on the parent ring the alkl substituent is located. The 2-yl in this name indicates where on the alkene chain the connection to the parent ring is (carbon 2). (E)-4-(pent-2-en-2-yl)cyclohex-1-ene

The 1 in this name indicates where on the parent ring the alkyl substituent is located.

(E)-1-(pent-2-en-2-yl)cyclohex-1-ene

The 2-yl is, as above, an indication of where the in the alkene chain the connection to the parent ring is (carbon 2)....
