2 Abstract

The abstract should be a single paragraph in block format (without paragraph indentation), and the appropriate length depends on the journal to which you are submitting, but they are typically between 150 and 200 words. (Students should consult their faculty member for the recommended length of the abstract.) The abstract should contain a “concise summary of the key points of your research,” (Anderson et al., 2016, para. 11). Section 2.04 of the APA manual (American Psychological Association [APA], 2010) has additional information about the abstract. The abstract is important because many journal readers first read the abstract to determine if the entire article is worth reading. The abstract should describe all four parts of an empirical paper (i.e., Introduction, Method, Results, and Discussion). Consider writing one or two sentences summarizing each part of a paper, and you’ll have a nice abstract.

You should know that this first part of the paper is called the “Introduction” section, yet it does not have a heading that actually says “Introduction.” Instead, the title of the paper is typed at the top of the first page. This section should include your thesis statement. Primary Heading 1 (Formatting in APA) In this section, I will start to talk about my first main point in the paper. Notice I am indenting this paragraph. Secondary Heading 1 (Font Style and Size) In this section, I will talk about a subset of my first main point in the paper. Notice I am indenting this paragraph. You can have more secondary headings if needed, which will look just as the one above. Primary Heading 2 (Citing your Sources) In this section, I will start to talk about my second main point in the paper. Notice I am indenting this paragraph. You may need to add tables, images, graphs, etc. to your papers.

When you do, you must add the word “Figure” and a number beginning with 1. The image must have a title or a brief description of the work. If the figure was taken from another source, you must include an in-text citation and a citation on the reference page. Secondary Heading 1 (In-Text Citations) In this section, I will talk about a subset of my first main point in the paper. Notice I am indenting this paragraph. You can have more secondary headings if needed, which will look just as the one above. Discussion/Conclusion Now it’s time to start my conclusion. I am going to wrap up my paper with a summary of the main points. This paragraph should not contain any new information.
