Description

Analyse the impacts of at least two urban dynamics operating in a large city of the developed world? Cities globally go through inundated fluctuations of population movements inflicting great change in the dynamics of the city. This can be seen through studying Sydney and the dynamics of suburbanisation and urban village, which have had monumentous impacts on the character of the city. Suburbanisation refers to the continual outward sprawl of development of housing and infrastructure away from the cities centre. Suburbanisation in Sydney occurred after the second World War, where individuals began to desire low density housing. This desire was possible as land prices were extremely cheap, allowing majority of young couples and families to live on the outskirts of the city with a desirable lifestyle. The effect of this suburbanisation movement was that it drove high birth rates increasing the population of Sydney immensely. These suburbanisation movements early on occurred on the north shore in places like Pymble. Another factor that drove suburbanisation was the development of rail networks, which eventually formed residential corridors for example the northern line. Suburbanisation was enamoured further by the development of the automobile, which took away the stress of needing to be near a rail network. This allowed for even further urban sprawl to places like the Northern Beaches where individuals could access the city on a day to day basis. The impacts of suburbanisation in 21st century Sydney has forced the growth of edge cities and satellite cities featuring areas with clusters of commercial and residential towers. This has been done to reduce the traffic congestion towards the city and spread out economic activity across the city to reduce travel times. Addtiionally due to suburbanisation, areas in the inner city, have become out dated and decayed significantly due to the reduction in manufacturing industries and the movement of populations into the outskirts of the city. These inner city suburbs throughout the 1990’s became very undesirable places to live and became a burden on the city’s aesthetic appeal due to the overwhelmingly dilapidated structures. Hence suburbanisation has had a significant impact on the character of Sydney.

Urban village is a distinctive residential district whose functional form and character is a mix of residential, recreational and commercial zoning. In Sydney this dynamic greatly changed the character of the city especially with the large influx’s of international migration, where specific ethnic groups settled in a specific suburban area, usually on the outskirts of the city. The factors that led to this was the desire for migrational groups desiring a tighter communal feel and replicate their culture in their own ethnic enclave. This can be seen with Italians in Leichardt or Vietnamese people in Cabramatta where they refuged to Australia during or after the Vietnam War seeking a more desirable lifestyle. The effect of this is that these suburbs become famous for their cultural characteristics and become tourist hot spots to experience different foods and cultures. However at times these cultural enclaves, have individuals who don’t speak fluent English, affecting their participation within common Australian society, and affecting their ability to access basic health services or be able to vote at elections. Further more in Cabramatta, throughout the 1980’s the Vietnamese communities had a lot of heroin issues, impacting the character of the suburb as the suburb was seen as dangerous and low socioeconomically due to the high crime rates. However the

urban villages have generated great change within Sydney and added immensely to the character of the city. Within cities, urban dynamics continually take place forcing great change of the character of the city and having significant impacts upon the city. As seen with Sydney, the continual change and growth of the city has led to great change in the form of suburbanisation and urban village....
