CONTENT ANALYSIS ON TWITTER

1. Choose an influential leader in public opinion on twitter. The influential leader Andrés and I have chosen is Benjamin Aaron Shapiro (commonly known as “Ben Shapiro”). Ben is an american conservative political commentator and a media host. At age 17 he became the youngest nationally syndicated columnist in the United States. He writes columns for the Creators Syndicate, Newsweek and, serve as editor emeritus for The Daily Wire, which he founded, and hosts The Ben Shapiro Show, a daily political podcast and live radio show. Apart from all this, Shapiro has written eleven books.

2. Analyze the themes that most characterize this influential person. Then create an analysis code. He produced coverage of: -

2016/2020 Presidential elections: In the 2016 general elections, Shapiro supported Ted Cruz instead of Donald Trump (which he supported in 2020). Alt-right: He is a critic of the Alt-right movement and argues that it has nothing to do with the constitutional conservatism. He was very critic with The Economist in 2019 when they described him as an alt-right person. The newspaper issued an apology and modified the article title to instead describe Shapiro as “radical conservative”. Gun ownership: Shapiro believes that banning all guns would be unwise as well as immoral. However, after the 2017 shooting in Las Vegas, he argued that policy makers should look at ways of enforcing federal laws banning the sale of guns to the mentally ill. Israeli-Palestinian conflict: According to Shapiro the reason of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is that “Israel exists, but Hamas wishes it didn’t” LGBT issues: He is a believer that a man and a woman raise kids better than two men or two women. Besides he was opposed to the removal of homosexuality as a mental illnes from the DSM. Muslims: He talked a lot about muslims in the context of the Afghanistan war. He believes that there are more of 800 million muslims in the world radicalized, and says that the myth of the tiny radical muslim minority is just that: a myth. Race: Shapiro recognizes that african-american were victims in the US long ago, but not today. He is a critical of the Black Lives Matter movement. Climate change: He recognizes that climate change is occurring, but questions: “What percentage of global warming is attributable to human activity?” Political ideology: He describes himself as “basically a libertarian”, and has been described by newspapers as “extremely conservative”. Religion: He practices Orthodox Judaism, a conservative stream of the Jewish religion.

3. Analyze at least 50 tweets and classify them by topic following the code.

4. Analyze if the issues mentioned by the opinion leader are the same that predominate in the twitter account of a communication medium. The issues mentioned by Ben Shapiro are definitely not the same that predominate in the twitter account of a communication medium. There are some common topics but Ben takes them to a whole other perspective. Personally speaking a more realistic and objective one. The ideology of the main Media channels in the U.S is unified. For example in the Biden-Trump situation, everybody mainstream channel supported Biden (Not Fox news for example) but Ben analized the “battle” from another perspective, and not following the tendency of the other channels.

5. Write an essay with the main findings of the research. Compare this findings with the theories of public opinion. One of the main theories studied in the course is “The Spiral of Silence”. In the case of Ben Shapiro, we can appreciate how he is literally the contrary of the main subject of this theory. In front of the mass media and the general public opinion, Ben Shapiro

is the one that thinks different to the others. He is not afraid of expressing his opinions even when they are a minority. We have seen this in the BLM movement for example. It was clear how nobody could stand against it if they didn't want to get criticized. However, Ben said that the BLM protests and the movement in general had created more racism than solving the problem. Besides, it could be related Ben’s feed with the framing theory. This theory explains how telling people only a part of an event, the whole vision of it could be changed. In the feed of Shapiro we could observe how he contributes to show the whole event and not just the framed part by the media. Nowadays its pretty common in the main mainstream media channels to inform only with a part of the event (with misleading headlines for example) , and in twitter accounts like the one of Ben, this is adverted and informed to the users of the platform....
