Analysis Warm Up: The Tell Tale Heart Link to Text/video: https://www.poemuseum.org/the-tell-tale-heart Link to film used in class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68dxrlaKL1I 1. Listen/watch the film as you follow along with the text. 2. Revisit the text and read it again. As you read, look for evidence of any literary devices that you can find. Examples of SOME common literary devices are in this document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/11d7CrQyf15nD0rXW71ni76zHmrHkKNUHs 3HVxvQJnEU/edit?usp=sharing 3. Please identify 5 DIFFERENT Literary Devices from the text and use a direct quote from the text as evidence of the literary device that you discovered. For EACH literary device, EXPLAIN how the quote you chose is evidence of the literary device. For example: Internal conflict: “I paced the floor to and fro with heavy strides, as if excited to fury by the observations of the men- but the noise steadily increased. Oh God, what could I do?” This quote shows evidence of internal conflict because the cause of the noise (the heartbeat) is coming from within the narrator’s own mind. This could be evidence that he is either insane or so filled with guilt about his nasty deed that he imagines that he hears the beating of the heart. : 1. Mood : eerie, suspenseful. The mood of this story was very suspenseful, especially the part where the officers came in the house to search and the narrator was losing it and eventually told on himself. 2. Imagery: “I saw it with perfect distinctness --all a dull blue, with a hideous veil over it that chilled the very marrow in my bones; but I could see nothing else of the old man's face or person.” This can be used as evidence for imagery because it gives the reader a description of the eye or the current situation. 3. Point of view : First Person narration - “For it was not the old man who vexed me, but his evil eye?” “And when the eye fell upon me, it chilled the very marrow of my bones.” This can be used as evidence for a first person point of view because the character is expressing his feelings about the eye so this is evidence that can be used for point of view. 4. Foreshadowing : “and so by degrees very gradually I made up my mind to

take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.” This can be used as evidence because this gives hints or clues to suggest events that will occur later in the story.

5. Symbolism: “I think it was his eye! yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture, a pale blue eye, with a film over it.” “for it was not the old man who vexed me, but his Evil Eye.” This could be evidence for symbolism because the eye was making the character experiencing paranoia and mental deterioration.

(fill in your answer here) (3 points per device x 5 = 15 points): 4. Identify ONE possible THEME of the story : One possible theme of the story is you cannot escape the evil through murder because the evil is within you (fill in your answer here)(10 points)

In the short story, The Tell Tale Heart, Edgar Allan Poe uses the literary device of symbolism to develop the central idea you cannot escape the evil through murder because the evil is within you. The narrator committed murder on the old man who he was taking care of. He didn’t realize that murdering the old man will affect him and also the vulture-like eyes he asserts to be evil remains to be evil . In paragraph 2 it states: “I think it was his eye! yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture, a pale blue eye, with a film over it” and the last sentence in the last paragraph “It is the beating of his hideous heart” the beating heart represents the narrator’s conscience because it convince him the error he committed in murdering the old man to the point he eventually confesses what he has done to the officers. This shows evidence of symbolism because the eye was a symbol for evil. The narrator described the eye as ‘evil’ and as that of a vulture. He was so disturbed by the old man’s eye he grew an obsession over the eye and obligated himself to remove the ‘evil eye’ from the old man which motivated his quest for murder, even though he had nothing against the old man....
