Description

Film Scene Analysis: Patch Adams 1. Apply the communication process model to Patch's speech. This model is briefly described in our text on page 374 and described in more detail in the online module (Communication Process webpage). Encode: Patch is encoding his message in spoken English Message: His message is clear and concise. Essentially that the meatpackers are great and cow meat is great. Medium: He is delivering this message face-to-face. This is the best medium for this kind of audience. Patch uses a lot of non-verbal communication to get his message across. This non-verbal communication is doing most of the talking. Noise: There is no noise to interfere with this message. Decode: The receiver’s can easily understand his message. We can see that with their constant group replies. Both Patch and the audience are engaged during the speech, to a point that he gets the audience to chant. 2. Utilizing information from our textbook and online module, assess and describe Patch's nonverbal communication. Patch uses a lot of hand gestures and facial expressions in his speech. You can see Patch applying the following during his speech:    

Directing his torso towards the audience. Leaning in. Constant eye contact. Using his hand and arm to make a point but using it every time he makes a big statement.

We know that Patch is not supposed to be speaking at a meatpacker’s convention. He is actively trying to deceive these people into thinking that he is one of them and succeeding.

3. Is Patch Adams an effective (competent) communicator? Why or why not? Patch Adams is a very effective communicator. He displays at least 2 of the 3 elements of an effective communicator. Power: The fact that he is speaking to everyone at the convention shows that he is an important person. He has been making an impact on a lot of individuals prior to the speech. Relevance: The audience can relate to Patch’s speech. He talks to the meatpacker’s as if he knows them and has been a meatpacker all his life. They quickly relate to him, and you see that through their

responses, especially when he speaks to them having a bad wrap or being proud of their meat. The environment he creates with his speech makes the speech that much more powerful and relevant....
