It became a standard treatment and has remained the most successful surgical and radiological procedure up to the present day. Computed tomography scanner invented by Sir Godfrey Hounsfield 1971. Hounsfield built a prototype head scanner and tested it first on a preserved human brain, then on a fresh cow brain from a butcher shop, and later on himself. COURSE OUTLINE

This large enrollment three-credit course provides a valuable opportunity to study human anatomy and is a pre-requisite for many academic disciplines in health sciences. It includes several interactive activities to keep learners engaged and assess their comprehension. The course was originally designed by Professor Gary Allen2 to provide you with the tools for independent study of the human anatomy; you must provide the initiative and enthusiasm.

It is the student's responsibility to keep up-todate by setting up Brightspace to receive instant notifications as things happen, or by regularly logging into Brightspace to check announcements and monitor Dal email. Although there is a vast amount of interesting clinical and anatomical information in the textbook, you are expected to learn only the topics outlined in resources supplied on Brightspace.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to describe and identify, at a basic level, the gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, and histology of the human body. Supplied on Brightspace (course content): - PowerPoint lectures - Virtual anatomy laboratory videos - Self-assessment laboratory questions - Screencast lectures The PowerPoint presentations contain the detailed study objectives, link to a screencast lecture, links to related virtual lab videos, links to WileyPLUS animations, flags suggesting appropriate points for taking TopHat questions, clinical input, links to supplementary optional videos, and complementary insets on etymology, art, biography, humor, and everyday life tips. Use the PowerPoint lectures in the slide show view to take advantage of the embedded features. Weekly online quiz assignments, with immediate feedback, are available on WileyPLUS and need to be submitted on time.

Students must manage their own time each week to know when WileyPLUS assignments are due.

Although the course offers some flexibility to learn at your own time and place, it is not completely self-paced. Thus, the study schedule in this syllabus (page 9) provides a suggested study plan in order to avoid cramming all the material just before the exams.

You are also encouraged to participate in optional interactive activities such as Digital Anatomy Learning (DAL) Project and Top Hat classroom response system that aim to promote learning anatomy and knowledge retention.

Direct contact with the instructor and site visits to the university and the Department of Medical Neuroscience are welcomed. Students are encouraged to communicate questions, problems, and concerns by e-mail or post questions on the Brightspace discussion board so that other students have the benefit of reading the response. 2

REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: The required material for this course is WileyPLUS. It comes with online learning resources, weekly quiz assignments and an electronic-textbook (Tortora G & Nielsen M. PRINCIPLES OF HUMAN ANATOMY, 14th Ed.). WileyPLUS is available through the Dalhousie Bookstore [(902) 494-6701] or you can purchase a hardcover textbook that comes with the WileyPLUS access code. When you access your eTextbook for the first time it will ask you, if you have a “Vitalsource” account enter your email address and continue. VIRTUAL ANATOMY LABORATORY

To carry out the labs, please view the lab videos on Brightspace (Content – Virtual Anatomy Labs) or click on the link to the related video from a PowerPoint lecture in the Slide Show view. There are no weekly assignments for virtual laboratory material, instead, you are required to download the interactive PowerPoint presentations for Self-assessment Lab Questions and view them in the Slide Show view. Identify the labelled structures then click or tap on the boxes to reveal the answer for immediate feedback.

Use the lab self-assessment interactive presentations in slide show view to hide labels before answering then have immediate feedback.

Please note that the Virtual Anatomy Laboratory Component is worth 20% of your final grade. The online Lab tests are scheduled on the same dates as the Midterm Examinations (Brightspace – Content – Assessments). Lab Tests consist of questions based on images captured from Virtual Lab videos, textbooks, PowerPoint lectures and Selfassessment Lab Questions. Check out the Practice Lab Test on Brightspace – content – assessments.

WileyPLUS ASSIGNMENTS

WileyPLUS assignments are worth 20 points. Remember to set your account time zone to Atlantic Time (Canada).

 These are sets of quiz questions that you will find on WileyPLUS.  The first set of weekly homework assignments is due after the first week of classes; new assignments will appear weekly and must be completed by the due date.  All assignments are due weekly. A LATE PENALTY (50%) will be applied only for assignments due after the FIRST MIDTERM EXAM.  The best way to access the assignments is to use the Assignments tab on WileyPLUS. You should pick up the assignment which has a title similar to the list of assignments in the Course Outline.  While you are doing the assignment, make sure that you click “check answer” before you move to the next question; otherwise, the answer is not considered and the question will continue to appear as a blue square in the thumbprint list of assignment questions.

5

WileyPLUS: The weekly homework quiz questions must be completed in WileyPLUS by the due date, late submissions will be accepted but penalized by 50%

 You have two attempts to answer each question and you can use a link to the e-textbook to review the relevant text before the second attempt.  When you are done with the assignment, it is vital that you click on the ‘Save to Gradebook’ after you finish to submit the assignment. If you do not see a grade in the WileyPLUS Gradebook then the assignment has not been submitted.

The late penalty will ONLY be assessed on assignments posted after the first midterm examination.
