My partner’s family is a lot more complicated than the one shown. There are a few more cousins that would have made this map much more complicated. I usually never think about a person’s kinship outside their nuclear family. This exercise helped me realize that you can never know anything about someone’s extended family by just looking at them. It also made me realize how different the paternal and maternal sides could be. One could be large and riddled with divorce while the other is small with many generations. Hearing about the complications caused by divorce made me realize how lucky I am to have a simple and whole family. While I do have many cousins, I am in contact with all of them, which I am very thankful for....
