Anxiety is a normal part of childhood and is usually a short harmless phase. However some children suffer from extreme fear, nervousness, and shyness and will start to avoid certain places and activities (Living with anxiety Children, 2018).

Anxiety disorders are affecting 1 in 8 children. 80 percent of kids with a diagnosable anxiety disorder are not getting treatment (Ghandour, Sherman, 2018).

Helping children suffering from anxiety

Outward Signs Kids could have trouble sleeping or frequently complain about physical ailments. May begin to be clingy towards parents or caregivers. Child may experience explosive outbursts.

The stigma’s

If left untreated 1. can lead to lower self esteem 2. academic dysfunction

Children suffering from anxiety disorder have to deal with the stigma that they are “over sensitive” or “over dramatic”, as well as being call “cry baby” or “scaredy cat”. If left unresolved the anxiety disorder can lead to depression.

Therapy Treatments Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been scientifically shown to be a very effective treatment, teaching kids techniques to reduce anxiety (Living with anxiety Children, 2018). CBT is generally short term (12 weeks) with long term benefits.

Medication Treatments Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the medication of choice to treat anxiety disorders in children. Close monitoring is needed when taking this kind of medication due to the slim possibility side effect of suicidal thoughts (Living with anxiety Children, 2018)....
