1. Using the medication ATI Active Learning template, what are common medications prescribed for anxiety? The most common medications prescribed for anxiety are Benzodiazepines, Xanax (alprazolam), Klonopin (clonazepam), Valium (diazepam) and Ativan (lorazepam). These medications tend to work quickly and typically bring relief to a client within 30 minutes to an hr. Benzodiazepines are usually the most commonly prescribed medication to treat anxiety. These drugs are effective during panic attacks or during an anxiety episode. These medications can be addictive and should not be recommended for long-term treatment

2. Reflect on the relationship between therapeutic communication. There are two types of communications a nurse can implement with clients. Social and therapeutic communication. Nurses can use these techniques when working with clients or families who seek help for physical or emotional needs. Social communication can occur daily as the nurse greets the client and passes the time with small talk. When the nurse uses therapeutic communication, she encourages the client to communicate their perceptions, fears,

anxieties, frustrations, expectations, and dependency needs. For example, the nurse can say, “You look upset” “Would you like to share your feelings with someone?” and “I’ll sit with you until the pain medication takes effect”.

3. Establishing trust and caring. How do you think these three concepts are related? Can you establish trust with an anxious client without engaging in therapeutic communication? How is caring related to the concepts of therapeutic communication and establishing trust? Have you ever been involved in or witnessed a scenario in which therapeutic communication was used with an anxious client? What was the impact on the client? On the health care provider?

Building trust and showing care to clients is one of the most important aspects of nursing and by establishing a positive relationship with clients, their families and other caregivers’ nurses will gain a better understanding of their clients’ needs and emotions. Therefore, ensuring they deliver the highest levels of care. Thus, you cannot establish trust with an anxious client without engaging in therapeutic communication because by not using therapeutic communication the nurse can take longer to understand the needs of the client. Interacting with a client who has anxiety can be challenging and can have harmful consequences if a nurse does not properly stablish trust and shows she cares for his/her needs and issues.

It is important for the nurse to use good communication techniques so the

patient will be able to trust her with their care. As a nurse it is important to remember that in healthcare settings nurses spends most of the time with clients, consequently positive interactions will determine the patient’s overall experience and willingness to accept care. For example, I have seen firsthand how important it is to put in place a therapeutic

communication with an anxious client. I work in a group home and one of my clients is always anxious and can get out of control because of it. I learn that if I talk to him and show him ways to deescalated and relax, he response better to me. I listen to his feeling and validate what is making him uncomfortable at that moment. Base on this my client responds well and have gain his trust, he understands that talking and using relaxation techniques will help him relax and calm down....
