APA Style Notes ● APA citation style is the most commonly used format for manuscripts in the social sciences ● Personal pronouns where it is appropriate ● Active voice rather than passive voice ● Language in an APA paper should be: ○ Clear: be specific in descriptions and explanations ○ Concise: condense information when you can ○ Plain: use simple, descriptive adjective and minimize figurative language ● The essay should be… ○ Typed ○ Double spaced ○ Have 1” margins ○ Use 10-12 pt in a standard font ○ Printed on standard-sized paper ○ Every page should include a page header in the upper left corner (the title all caps) ○ The page number in the upper right ● The four main parts are (in order) title, abstract, main body, and reference page ● Title ○ Page header, title with name, affiliation ● Abstract ○ 150-250 word summary in a paper in an accurate, concise, and specific manner ● Main body ○ Type and center the title ○ Type doubled space with all sections without a break ○ Identify the source you use in the paper ○ Format table and figures ● Reference page ○ Cent the title (references) at the top of the page ○ Double space reference entries ○ Flush left the first line of the entry and indent subsequent lines ○ Order entries alphabetically by surname of the author of each work ○ Invert author’s name (last name followed by initials) ○ Only capitalize the first word of a title, if it has a colon or a dash in the title proper nouns do not capitalize the first letter of the word in a hyphenated compound

○ Capitalize all major words in journal/book/longer work titles do not italicize, underline or put quotes around the titles of shorter works such as journal articles or essays in edited collection. ○ Have the authors name and the date of publication ○ For quotations and close paraphrases provided the author's name, date of publication, and a page number ● Quoting ○ Introduce quotation with a single phrase ○ Include the author's name, year of publication, and a page number ○ Keep citation brief - don't repeat citations ○ If you summarize you add their name to the end in parenthesis ○ Use words like: acknowledged, contended, maintained, responded, reported, argued, concluded, etc. ○ When taking two ideas from two people but making it your own you need to add credit by citing the authors name separated with a semicolon ○ When citing a work with 3 to 5 authors identify all authors and then when citing the same group of people have the first name then add ‘et al’; with 6 or more used the first name and add ‘et al’ ○ When citing from an unknown author use the sources full title in the signal phrase ○ Cite the first work of the title in the title followed by year of publications in parenthesis use quotation marks for articles and chapter and book and reports italicized ○ When citing authors with the same last name used the first initial if work is done in the same year and contain the same initials mark “a, b, c” after the year ● http://owl.english.purdue.edu...
