APPLE SUPPLIERS AND LABOR PRACTICES 2 Apple Suppliers and Labor Practices Discussion Questions Personally, Apple should not be held responsible for the ethical lapses happening in its supply chain. This is because Apple is a big company with tens of thousands of tin miners and very many intermediaries in between, making it hard for them to regulate where the products come from. Apple changing suppliers would not help change anything as those practices would still go on with other companies that do not care about ethical practices, but rather the profit they make. Apple is a big company that can get into a conversation with the countries involved, such as Indonesia, to come up with regulations and policies that are ethical, which could serve as a control measure for these suppliers. As a consumer myself I don’t see it necessary for people to take in to account the ethical track record of companies before buying their products. These large multinationals like Apple have built their brands through advertisements making their products respected and valued by their customers. Ethical track records should be left for the companies to solve while the customers should only focus on the quality of the products. Ethically questionable businesses are mainly motivated by their profit margins, which is the case in the clothing industry. Production of some clothing brands has been found to occur in developing countries such as Asia, where they employ unethical practices like meager wages and overworking of their workers, enabling them lower production costs. Many customers are not turned by the company’s unethical practices but are rather pleased because the clothes are cheap.
