- Make sure there is an order for restraints, use of restraints without an order is considered false imprisonment - Have knowledge of laws regarding restraints and proper use of them

- Orders for restraints should be ordered for the shortest amount of time possible - Needs to be 2 finger spaces in between restraint and patients arm - Must fit patient properly

- If patient is restrained without order, an order must be written within 15-30 minutes of restraining patient

- Proper restraints need to be used depending on situation/ patient

- Orders for restraints must state why the patient is being restrained

- Restraints shouldn't interfere with the treatment)

- There are different types of restraints such as physical, seclusion, and chemical

- Restraints are to be used for patients with behavioral problems and/ or patients who are at risk of harming themselves/ others - Monitor restraints frequently to ensure patient does not have any skin breakdown or is at risk for skin breakwon - Document everything such as the time the restraints were put on, the reason for the restraints being put on, any medications administeredpatients behavior, needs provided for patient, vital signs, etc.

- Restraints can be used in emergency situations if the patient is of danger to themselves and/ or others
