Morgan White March 16, 2018 ART 126: Paper Assignment #1 Moonlight Revelry at Dozo Sagami Artist: Kitagawa Utamaro Late 18th- early 19th century Medium: Ink and color on paper Location: Japan Formal Analysis The Moonlight Revelry at Dozo Sagami by Kitagawa Utamaro, is a beautiful piece of art full of peacefulness and elegance. This artwork portrays Japanese women. Kitagawa Utamaro is known for creating an absolutely new type of female beauty. He exaggerates the proportions of the body and makes them more extreme. By looking closely at this piece of artwork, the elongation of the women’s necks and nose is very noticeable. This was something that made Utmaro’s artwork stand out and be different than others. Throughout this art piece there is a surplus of irregular line quality, this give the artwork a sense of gracefulness and fluidity. You can witness how well he represented the culture of these women. Utamro uses his abstract art to break himself away from the traditional representations of women by using a surplus of different techniques and elements. By observing this painting by Kitagawa Utamaro, it is visible that he uses a great deal of different elements to make this painting what it is. With that being said, the medium used in this specific piece of art is ink and color on paper. By using this medium Utamaro was able to choose out of the many different pens and types of paper to make his masterpiece unique. The

dimensions of the art work Moonlight Revelry at Dozo Sagami are approximately one-hundred and ninety-five by three-hundred and forty-nine centimeters. The element of shape is also used all throughout this work of art. This piece is flat, which is two-dimensional. The shape is created through lines, textures, colors or an area enclosed by other shapes. Some shapes that are most visible and dominant in this piece of art are mostly around the outside of the piece. There are rhombi that go all around the art work that give the art a border-like encasing. As well as the floor is made up of many squares and rectangles. These shapes are known as geometric shapes that have perfect, uniform measurements. The shapes are presented in a few different patterns. For example, the very detailed patterns on the dressing of the women. Another example is the rhombi that are in a repeating pattern surrounding the artwork. There are also shapes that seem to recede into space, such as the boats in the background and the shape of the gold divider on the left side of the piece. In addition to those few elements used, there are also a handful of other elements in which the artist took advantage of using. Another element used throughout this piece of art is light. The light is pretty well evenly distributed. The light does not appear to be coming from a single direction. It seems as if the artist made the background look gloomier than the inside of the building so it would draw more attention to the detail of the women and the inside of the building. The color used in this piece of art is mainly on the robes of the women. The dominant colors used are beige, red, grey, blue, and green. The artists used a wide range of colors. Utamaro creates contrast through complementary colors by using red and green and also blue and grey. The beige is a muted color as well as the blue and grey colors throughout the piece. The colors on the robes of the women are more intense to the eye. By just looking at the picture of the artwork online it looks as if the texture of the piece would be smooth. The art seems to be

smooth over the whole artwork and feels the same overall. There is an illusion that the outside pattern might feel rougher than the inside of the art due to the patterns the artist uses. The ink Utamaro used is on paper so it would most likely feel like a thicker piece of paper. The artist uses space to draw the viewers eye beyond the picture by placing the boats in the water behind the building. This represents the deep space portrayed in the art. Lastly, the element of line is used greatly in this artwork. There are numerous defined lines that are a darker color so that they really stand out in the piece. The lines are mostly straight and there are sharp diagonals and angles used to create the shapes in the artwork. The lines are well balanced and ordered. There is some irregular line usage on the robes and shapes of the women, this make the women seem flowy and gives a sense of grace in the art. Going off of the elements used in this specific piece of art, there are many emotions that were portrayed by using these many different elements. The artist represents a sense of beauty of the Japanese culture. By using the variety of colors and patterns throughout the piece of art draws the human eye to look deeper into the art piece. Utamaro was known as a master of the beauty genre, which is very noticeable in this piece by him. His use of lines helps show the elongation in the faces of the women and present a feeling of pleasure to the human eye. Utamaro’s elongation of the proportions of the women’s body parts indicates his goal to provide an abstracted view on the beauty and gracefulness of women of the Japanese culture. The artist has succeeded this goal to break himself away from the traditional representations of women by using multiple elements and techniques throughout this unique piece of art....
