Titian, Venus of Urbino 1538, Venus’ body is very similar to Giorgione’s sleeping Venus. o Both of them are laying down, pleasuring themselves o Titian’s venus is indoors, and has a bracelet, a version of an arm band, and holds flowers, a attribute of Venus, o Titian’s venus is about marriage, the women going through the chests in the back getting clothes for venus. The chests are wedding chests, women would get them when they got married. Cassone, means big box, what the chests were called. The plant in the window is a myrtle plant, associated with marriage. The dog sleeping could symbolize fidelity to her husband. o Her pleasuring herself is made more obvious because of the wall ending right where her hand is and her vagina is in the center of the work, draws the eye to it, she is preparing herself for her husband. Titian, Rape of Europa, 1559-1562, made for the king of Spain o She is riding on a bull, which is Zeus disguised as a bull. Shows how much his style changes since he painted the Madonna, less strictly painted, more sketchy. This one shows his energy too with the drapery, the cupid. It’s still about color even though there are not a bunch of super bright colors. o Looks like Titian painted the bulls tail one way, but then changed their mind and painted over it, but after centuries, the paint is so thin you can see through to the first version, called a pentimento. La Serenissima, means Venice is the most serene republic, what is one way that venice deserves the title of most serene o Stability of it’s government, the doge was a member of the oligarchy, but there was space who were not nobility in the government they weren’t shut out it was a republic o It was never successfully invaded, people tried but were never successful, probably because of all the water around it. Lasted a long time without being invaded, 1200-1700. Line is associated with Florence and Rome, central Italian art, Michelangelo, Rafael, brushstrokes would never be visible. Color is associated with Venice, Titian, Giorgione, brushstrokes visible, color and paint was more important than the lines and drawing. Artist switched from panels to canvas because: it was portable, it could be rolled up easily and then just stretched when got to destination, wood panel warped because it was so damp there, canvas was way more flexible. Tintoretto (little dyer, son of a fabric dyer), Last Supper, 1592-94 o Uses linear perspective, all of the diagonal lines converge to the upper right hand corner of the table, because people would see the painting from the angle that the table to pointing.

o Can recognize his work from all the darkness in them, and then small bits of bright light, like the halo around jesus, and the chandelier, creates mysteriousness with angels coming out of darkness. Andrea Palladio, Architect, Villa Rotunda, Vicenza, begun 1567-69, a villa is a house that is outside of the city. o People wanted fancy looking buildings that weren’t farm buildings, outside of the city. o He’s the first artist to put a portico (temple porch) on a residential building. Like the Pantheon and Temple of Pontunus in Rome. o Six columns with a pediment on top, this was the only villa with four porticos, one on each side. o How did Palladio become so well known when they were in the countryside? They know his work from his books of architecture which became famous, Thomas Jefferson owned a copy. The Four Books of Architecture....
