Parramatta SSC median household income, 1779, was $197 greater than Narrabeens’ SSC average household income which was 1582.
2.

For Parramatta, median weekly rent was $415 along with the median monthly repayment of $2200. The Median weekly rent for Narrabeen was $515 and the median monthly mortgage repayments were $2311.
3.

4.

PART III: EXPLANATION OF REASONS FOR SOCIO-ECONOMIC DIFFERENCES
Socio-economic status is the family or individual standing of a social class which is mostly determined through a person’s education, work, and income. Throughout the world there is seen to be diverse range of socio-economic status, this is mostly dependent on a country’s status and or their governments distribution of funds as explained by (Wiesel, Buckle and Liu, 2020) public spending is largely seen in disadvantaged areas that are further away from the Sydney CBD which has displayed a deficiency concerning “transport, roads, healthcare and education”. With uneven distribution of funding suburbs around Sydney are prone to socio-spatial polarisation which is displayed through the comparison tables in the appendix.
Through socio-spatial polarisation over the past decade it is evident through the 2016 census that there is a significant reduction of household income within suburbs around the Sydney CBD. Within Parramatta, the 2016 census revealed that the median household income was 1779 this was $179 greater than Narrabeens’ median household income. It can be seen through table 11 in the appendix, household income within Parramatta SSC below $650 gross weekly income has a 15.1% figure compared to Narrabeen SSC less than $650 gross weekly income that had a 17.9% figure. However, it is also seen that Narrabeen’s gross weekly income greater than $3,000 has a 20.3% rate in comparison to Parramatta’s SSC gross weekly income greater than $3,000 which is at 18.3%. These figures display a socio-spatial polarisation between each suburb, these two suburbs can be used as examples between other disadvantaged Sydney suburbs. This difference is due to a lack of physical facilities,
institutional support and social networks that provide access to education, jobs and other valued opportunities as explored by (Redmond and Skattebol, 2020).
Unemployment is also seen to be significantly different between Parramatta SSC and Narrabeen SSC, in 2016 Parramatta Census reordered 7.3% unemployment and when compared to Narrabeen’s unemployment it was substantially higher with Narrabeen’s rate at 2.7%. There are many possible
4
102170 People Place and Social Difference reasons these Parramatta SSC has shown a greater percentage compared to Narrabeen unemployment rates, one main example would be due to an insignificant opportunity structure in Parramatta SSC. This also can be supported by the fact that 62.1% of Parramatta’s population are from an ethnic background, and their families immigrated from other disadvantaged countries and opportunity structures. In comparison, 69.9% of Narrabeen’s population are Australian with the closest cultural peoples at 2.3% of Narrabeens population. With migrant figures rising in Australia, migrants find it tough to “afford gateway suburbs due to increasingly unaffordable housing, reduced employment opportunities in low-skilled jobs and the erosion of government support for newly arrived immigrants”. (Easthope and Stone, 2020) Due to increasing unaffordability, migrants are already placed at a disadvantage as they enter Australia leading to an increasing figure of unemployment in disadvantaged suburbs.
