Assignment 1: Study and Transferrable Skills 1) The combination used for ‘Middle English, Early Modern English ’ is: 25=BD 2) Our library has three copies of the book, with each being a different version. The original 1999 version is up for regular loan, while the copy of the 2007 version can not be rented, as it is currently permanently rested elsewhere. The 2011 version can be rented, but only for a short time (Kurzausleihe), as it has to be accessible for other students as well. 3) There are currently 30 libraries in Germany, that hold the book Negation in English Speech and Writing (Tottie 1991). It can be rented from them via the ‘Fernleihe’. 4a) The name of the author is Valentin Werner. 4b) The paper can be found in Volume 26, Issue 01. A Volume is the set of Is sues that have been published in a calendar year. An Issue is part of the yearly Volume, with most Volumes containing four Issues, which are normally published every three months. 4c) The second word on the fourth page of the article is the word: ‘to’. 5) No, logging in with the access from Trier-University does not unlock any new articles or Issues on the website of the publisher. But around 50 articles can be accessed because they are either free or have open access. 6)The page numbers are the pages 117 to 140 and the Section 2.2 is titled: Stress in complex constructions in English. 7)The most recent publication on complex prepositions is called: ‘National and EU Juridical Phraseology under the Magnifying Glass: A Corpus-Assisted Analysis of Complex Prepositions in Spanish ’, which was published in 2021. The most recent with a connection to English studies is called: ‘How to Make New Use of Existing Resources: tracing the History and Geographical Variation of “off of ”’, which was published in 2020. 8a) The earliest attestation of the noun kakistocracy is in the year 1829. The attestation makes sense as the word was first used in a time where democracy as a whole was just beginning to be used in various European countries. Its only logical that people thought a lot about the idea of democracy and came up with the idea of a kakistocracy. 8b) ˈrɑːzb(ə)ri and ˈrazb(ə)ri 8c) The term alligator was first used in the 16th century to refer to any kind of crocodile in the Americas. It was later in the 19th century also used for clothing made of these animals as well as tough boatmen, which travelled the rivers in Mississip pi and Ohio, where these animals lived . Still in the same century, big hogs were also referred to as alligators, and various machines which were squashing metal or rocks between a jawlike structure came to be known as alligators too. Two other inventions in the late 19th and 20th century were also called alligators, one because it was a flat paddle boat powered by steam, which reminded of a crocodile, the other because it was an amphibious military vehicle, which could be used in the habitat in which the alligator lived. The term was also used in the 20th century Jazz/Swing scene, in that case referring to a person who was devoted to Jazz or Swing, but could not play an instrument. The newest use of the word is in a colloquial style in the 20th century, where the word alligator became a sort of catch phrase when two people were saying goodbye to each other.

8d) The most words originating from North Germanic languages were recorded in the 1860s, with that being 27 words. The decade with the second most recorded words is the 1880s with 23 words. 9) Et al. generally means ‘and others’. It is used when many authors work together on a publication and not everyone can be named on the books cover....
