Description

Operations Management: Assignment 1 (Week 2) You can write your answers to these questions in a Word doc and upload them to the Assignment dropbox in the course for grading by your instructor. There are 4 questions in this assignment (15 points)

Question 1 (4 points) A JIT/lean system uses kanban cards to authorize production and movement of materials. In one portion of the system, a work centre uses an average of 110 pieces of a part per hour. The manager has assigned a safety factor of 1.00. Standard containers are designed to hold four dozen pieces each. The cycle time for a kanban is 126 minutes. How many kanbans are needed? (Round the final answer to the nearest whole number)

N=? D = 110 units per hr T = 126mins= 2.1 hr C = 48 units X = 1.00 Using the kanban formula, N= DT(1+x) C =110*2.1(1+1) 48 = 9.625 round to 10 containers So, N is 9.625 or 2 containers

Question 2 (4 points) A cell uses 95 kg of a certain material each day. The material is transported in vats that hold 57 kg each. Cycle time for a kanban is about two and half hours. The manager has assigned a safety factor of 0.50. The plant operates on an eight-hour day. How many kanbans are needed? (Round the final answer to the nearest whole number) N=? D = 95kg per day T = 2.5/8= 0.31 C = 57kg X = 0.50 Using the kanban formula, N= DT(1+x) C =95*0.31(1+0.50) 57 = 0.775 round to 1 So, N is 0.775 or 1

Question 3 (3 points) Calculate the takt time for a system where the total time per shift is 480 minutes, there is one shift, and workers are given two 10-minute breaks and 45 minutes for lunch. Daily demand is 310 units. (Round the final answer to 2 decimal places) Net available time= 480-65=415 Takt time=415/310=1.32 mins

2

Question 4 (4 points) What takt time would match capacity and demand if demand is 135 units a day, there are two shifts of 440 minutes each, and workers are given three half-hour breaks during each shift, one of which is for lunch or dinner? (Round the final answer to 2 decimal places) (440*2) - (2*3*30) = 700 mins available to match capacity and demand Cycle time = time/quantity = 700/135 = 5.15 min
