Description

Last Name 1 Assignment 11 1. Describe the differences between cults and sects? A cult displays a strong dedication to a particular mindset. An example used in the lesson was the Cult of Virgin Mary, they were dedicated to the idea of a god preforming miracles and a women who vehemently supported their messiah Jesus. While a sect can describe the overall separation of a cult from a church or congregation. For instance one sect of the Abrahamic religion of Judaism still participates in the tradition of not using any form of electricity on the Sabbath, however not all Jews partake in this tradition.

2. Briefly compare and contrast the Haitian Voodoo beliefs in zombies and Hollywood version of zombies. Both are trapped and can complete acts in the name of survival; linger till they are put to rest (killed in a big budgeted Hollywood explosion, or serving the spirits). The ritual of boko can force a someone to become an aimless drone wandering for eternity. Contrastingly Hollywood zombies were formed based on a virus which some mad scientist, environmental agency, or some abnormal event caused the initial “Frankenstein” strain to get loose. Haitian zombies can be a captured soul forced in to a spiritual slavery where they carry out nefarious acts and maintain a somewhat health stature thanks to Vodu healing rituals. Hollywood zombies are mindless beings with no purpose or consciousness and mindless knaw on everything. While Haitian zombies are unsettled spirits to died without finishing serving their gods and won’t be able to fully die till they complete their gods’ commands.

Last Name 2 3. Analyze the lyrics to "Redemption Song" by Bob Marley. After reading the lyrics, answer the questions below:

A. What do you think is the overall meaning of this song? What are they redeeming (body, mind or soul)? Could it be referring to a redemption of the soul or something which was denigrated by colonialism/slavery? The overall meaning is an ultimate freedom which is dreamt of and written about. Where no external force (unjust slavery, jobs, social media, religions, etc.) is controlling our very beings. I believe this song was referring to the redemptions of the body, mind, and soul. Bob Marley begins his song by narrating the transaction of slavery through the following lyrics “…Sold I to merchant ships”, he is talking about a physical and psychological redemption in the beginning versus. As the song progresses Marley refers to a redemption from a mental slavery on an atomic level through the lyrics “Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery….None but ourselves can free our minds”. In the total conclusion of the song I believe Bob Marley was talking about freeing the masses from a mental slavery and it was referring to the bonds of slavery and colonialism but he knew that the song would live on to be interpreted.

B. What does the word redemption mean to Religious people in general? Redemption is an act of eternal freedom and centering. For Buddhist achieving the ultimate dharma and moving on to the next cycle of creation ; for Christians it’s accepting the concept that a man was brutally abused, nailed to a cross, and rose from the dead as an eternal messiah. Redemption is the sliver of hope that our souls can be washed clean for an eternal glory.

Last Name 3 C. What does the word redemption mean to Rastafarians in particular? It means freedom to return home. An interpretive definition, so that Rastafarians in particular can have the choice to find home, and smoke as much marijuana as they desire....
