Reading 4_1 (p.1 of the file) 1. As a genre of literature, what are the characteristics of folk tales (not specific presentational/organizational characteristics)? The characteristics of folk tales are that they have repetition of different motifs and symbols that match the moral of the story. They also have lessons generally that bring the story together and describe why the story is important now. There are generally only 2 characters in a given scene to get rid of the complexities that are generally in full fiction stories. The plot is also very straightforward as well as a level of consistency that is necessary. 2. In the Dangun (Tangun) myth, who are his father and mother, and how is it interpreted? In the myth, his father is the son of God, Hwan-ung. His mother is a transformation of a bear called, Ung-Nyeo. This is interpreted as a metaphor for the connection between man and earth. Both characters are symbolism for Korean shamanism in terms of them both becoming united, just like the country would become.

Reading 4_1 (from p.2 of the file) 3. In the Dangun (Tangun) myth, three gods of what accompanied Hwang-ung when he came down to the earth, and what do you think it means in Korean culture? The three gods that came down to Earth were wind, air and rain. These three were meant to describe the nature aspects and how important they are to all life. They were necessary in Dangun’s story just as they are necessary in the lives of the Koreans under the religious beliefs of the time. 4. Elements of what religions are shown in the myth? Elements of Confucianism and Buddhism are seen in the myth through the idea of ruler and ruled as well as through the connection to humanity and nature.

Reading 4_2 1. In Shim-Cheong’s story, which Confucian virtue is most highly regarded? In Shim-Cheong’s story, the virtue of filial piety is very important in terms of respect and love for others. This is shown through not just the name of the story, but through Sim Cheong’s obedience toward her father throughout her life. 2. In Shim-Cheong’s story, elements of what religion(s) shown? Confucianism was shown through the idea of filial piety but Buddhism was also shown

through the ideals of reincarnation for good deeds as well as the connection between sea and humanity as the sea is apart of nature. 3. What do the basic concepts of Confucianism, Three Obediences and Five Constant Relationships, outline? The basic concepts of Samgangoryun outline the basic human relationship as well as the proper social conduct to live by during the time. For women at the time, the three obediences were to obey her father, her husband, and if she is a widow, her eldest son. The five relationships followed the ideas of benevolence and reverence, filial piety, nobility and respect, as well as humanity and deference. 4. In Chun-Hyang’s story, which virtue is most highly regarded? In Chun-hyang’s story, the virtue most highly regarded is Yeol nyeo-mun. Yeol nyeo-mun is the idea that a woman must show great marital fidelity and filial piety to her parents-in-law. 5. In Chun-Hyang’s story, what social classes are the characters from? In the story, some of the characters are higher middle class. This is because Mong-ryong, the boy in the story, family had a nobleman and a court entertainer in their family. Chunhyang’s family was in the lower class and considered a commoner. 6. In Chun-Hyang’s story, what particular official position did the male character attain and how did he do it? The male character became the village magistrate after the previous magistrate was put in jail by him for trying to kill Chun-hyang....
