Case Study: Shell Canada fuels productivity with ERP Read textbook, pp. 450-451 and answer the followings. 1. How did ERP help improve business operations at Shell? Before ERP was introduced, all the process and work was being done manually including the invoicing work, and processing the invoice further manually. After the ERP system came into the shell company all the system was computerized and the data was being managed centrally that is all the data was transferred into a central hub from where anyone who wants information can pick up directly. ERP brings the organization together. ERP makes all the department centralized which enable all departments to coordinate and make system more useful. 2. How important was training in helping roll out the system to Shell personnel? It was really important for shell personnel to get training of the ERP system as it proved to be invaluable in teaching end user the mechanics of system and raising awareness of the benefit of the system and the efficiencies that the ERP system could offer shell Canada. The training not only helped promote end user acceptance of the ERP system but also greatly increased employees intentions to use the system in their daily work . 3. How could extended ERP components help improve business operations at Shell? Extended ERP component such as Supply Chain Management (SCM), Customer Relationship management (CRM), E-Business Component, and Business Intelligence (BI), can help they meet the organizational needs as its main focus is on external operations. SCM will help shell to plan and manage the supply accordingly and CRM will allow them to interact with customers, E-business can help them managing buying, selling, collaborating online and serving customers in vast areas and BI will help them in managing and assisting decision. 4. What advice would you give Shell if it decided to choose a different ERP software solution? ERP System are best to suit the need of every business as it is designed so well that all the links are connected to each other and the power of decision making gets better and improves a lot. ERP system is made up of a balance scorecard where it balances all the factors of the business to show a wider view of the decision made. Many business make some changes in ERP systems as well, which can be costly as every time there will be updates in the system, special settings for the user needs to be done. I would suggest that having ERP system is like gaining competitive advantage and thinking ahead then your rivals. 5. How can integrating SCM, CRM and ERP help improve business operations at Shell? Integrating all these system at shell will balance all the pros and cons of the shell system which will clarify organization their vision and strategy and translate them into action.
