While the transition from high school to college is almost always challenging, the article is correct in stating that certain low level courses, nicknamed “gatekeeper” courses, can make the undergraduate experience especially difficult for students. While I’ve witnessed firsthand the struggles that many students face when enrolled in these historically challenging courses, Arendale brought to my attention that first generation and low income college students are especially disadvantaged by these courses; without assistance, many of these historically underrepresented students may feel helpless or consider dropping out of school. While I’ve always understood that the PAL program is a valuable asset to Clemson’s campus, I now realize just how essential this program is in ensuring that every student is granted the chance to succeed. After attending several PAL sessions during my first year at Clemson, I noticed both the diverse background of the students and the varied methods of instruction used by the PAL leaders, two of the many strengths of the Peer Assisted Learning Model. I found the most enlightening part of the article to be the description of the PAL model and the theories guiding it. The aspect of Universal Design for Learning, with its varied teaching strategies and diverse learning activities, aligns perfectly with my belief that all students should have an equal opportunity for success, regardless of background or educational abilities. As a potential future PAL Leader, I look forward to incorporating aspects of the UDL method into my PAL strategy and working hard to ensure that every student, regardless of socioeconomic background or educational capacity, is afforded an equal opportunity for success....
